Gianluca Naso wipes out Thomas Schoorel to move into main draw – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Closing down the final qualifiers of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011 on Monday, 19th September, Thomas Schoorel, Dutch, played his main draw qualifier against Gianluca Naso of Italy. Battling out on classic clay court
at Bucharest, Romania, the Italian world No.259 ousted the 22-year-old Dutch 7-6(4), 6-4 in less than two hours and walked into the main draws.
Kicking off with the starter, Naso opened up serving and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. The Italian went on breaking the Dutch early, game 2, making it seem like a practice session. Following up with another win, 3-0, the Italian
switched the serve.
Winning his first game of the set, Schoorel fired up the match with a startling serve-break-serve weapon and levelled up the scores. The 22-year-old Dutch stumbled as he lost a breakpoint serving game 7, however, he made a quick
recovery winning his second breakpoint and levelling the set scores to 4-4.
The two served out their respective serves to end up in a tiebreak. With Naso to serve first in the tiebreak, the 22-year-old found no defence as the lower ranked, Naso, hampered the tiebreak taking away the set with a magnificent
comeback, 7-6(4). Frustrations increased as the 24-year-old’s offense cranked up the nerves of the former world No.94.
Moving on with the 2nd set, Schoorel took out the first game serving, 1-0. Naso pulled off every time the young Dutch took lead, however, this did not go on for long when, in game 7, the Italian broke and took the lead
winning the following game with a cross-court winner, 4-3.
As the scoreboard read 5-3 in favour of the Italian world N0. 259, Schoorel did cut the lead to 4-5, yet could not break and level the scores. Serving out the final game of the set, Naso took off winning the second set 6-4 and
the match 2-0.
Comparatively, the Italian had a better view of the clay circuit as he had been playing most of his prior 10 matches on clay and winning 6 out of those. Although the 22-year-old had a better ranking, the ranking had no bearing
on the result. Statically, Naso had a greater percentage of 2nd serve winners that led to his win.
Securing 48 service points and 32 returners, the Italian world No.259 grabbed the main draw seat totalling 80 points against 72 of the Dutch youngster. The 8 point difference depicts the intensity of the play as both had a mere
difference in their play.
Naso will now play against another qualifier, the Frenchman, Florent Serra in the opening round match of the Bucharest Open 2011 on Tuesday, 20th September to battle it out for the next round.
