Gianluigi Quinzi ousts Julien Cagnina in the third round – Boys’ Singles US Open 2012
Third seeded Italian, Gianluigi Quinzi, breezed past Julien Cagnina in the third round of US Open Boys’ Singles at the Flushing Meadows held at the hard courts of New York, United States. The Italian junior jolted down a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 triumph on Friday.
Quinzi was not fortunate enough to establish a breakthrough since the opening game of the encounter and 16thseed Cagnina got into the driving seat with two cracking breaks of serve. The Belgian participant seized the opportunity and stamped the set with a 3-6 score.
The 18-year-old Belgian only struck two aces and had a typical first serve accuracy of 61 percent, securing 15 of 19 points on it. He also snatched two of the three serve breaks against his competitor. On the other hand, Quinzi had a 52 percent first serve precision in the opener. He managed to nudge nine of 15 points and ended the set without a single ace.
The second set completely changed the picture; the Italian right-hander nudged forward on the hard courts and adopted a more proactive game plan than before. Cagnina’s performance was quite stable at the start but he started to drop his serve as the game evolved, the Italian participant battled forward to mark a set-win at 6-2.
Quinzi had satisfactory stats, with 48 percent first serve precision and eight of 12 points. Cagnina had slightly better percentage of 57, pocketing 11 of 16 points but he could not capitalize even a single serve break in the set, eventually losing the set in a dismal manner.
The decider proved to be an easy deal for the 16-year-old Italian, he drastically improved his first serve by 60 percent, clamping 11 of 15 points. Cagnina proved to be useless and could not secure even a single serve break. Riding his commanding lead, the Italian consolidated a score line to mark a 6-1 victory.
Both players encountered each other for the second time at the Grand Slam and the Italian contender imprinted his 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series. Quinzi in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships, gleefully bagged home the title against the Belgian native as he withdrew in the third set and gifted him a 6-1, 3-1 win.
For the next round the Italian junior will encounter the Japanese, Yoshihito Nishioka, he defeated the German Maximilian Marterer in the previous round.
