Gianni Mina edged past Julien Obry to reach the second round – Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 CH
In an all-French battle, wild card enterer Gianni Mina tumbled over Julien Obry in straight sets at the Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 on Wednesday. He penned down a 7-6(4), 7-5 victory over his qualifying compatriot to charge into the round of 16 at this hard
court tournament taking place at Stade Lambert Lamby in Le Gosier.
The 20-year-old Mina required a single break of serve in the last game of the match to pull out the victory in one hour and 51 minutes. He struck 11 aces and produced a better fist serve share of 62 per cent in contrast with his fellow citizen’s 57 per cent.
The winning French also amazingly clicked 33 out of 44 points on it and brushed off both breakpoints he came across to earn the fame.
The lower ranked French contestant assertively entered this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. Mina then warded off all three breakpoints he came across to keep his remaining
serves. However, he squandered all three break chances and imposed a tie-breaker. The beaming French outclassed Obry in it and clinched the opener with a 7-6(4) score line.
Ranked 488th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Mina improved his game in the proceeding set and smoothly swiped in entire serves without facing any hindrance. He cashed in the lone break opportunity in the last game and pocketed
the set by winning seven games to five.
The stars previously met each other at the Portugal F4 and after earning this victory, Mina avenged his loss against Obry.
Next challenge for the wild card is the fifth seed, Igor Kunitsyn of Russia. The Russian seed capitalised on all three break chances to outclass the Slovenian challenger, Grega Zemlja, in straight sets.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert will also feature in the second round. The 21-year-old upset the seventh seed, Tatsuma Ito, with a breadstick to occupy this position. He coughed fewer errors and smashed seven vicious aces to seal the deal with a 6-1, 7-6(5) score
line in 109 minutes.
