Giant Ryan euthanized after fracturing both left sesamoids
Foaled in 2006, the New York champion sprinter, Giant Ryan, has been euthanized following his horrific trip in the Grade 2 True North Handicap, where vying for the lead from Caixa Eletronica, the Shivananda Parbhoo owned runner fractured both left sesamoids
on 9 June, 2012.
Bred in New York by Thomas-Lakin, Giant Ryan was euthanized at the University of Pennsylvania at New Bolton.
“It’s really sad. To the family, he meant everything,” said Bisnath Parboo June 14. Parboo trained Giant Ryan for his father, Shivananda Parbhoo. “He’s the best horse we’ve had for a long time. He took us everywhere we wanted to go. To lose him like this
was really hard. We tried everything we could to save him.”
As first reported by Daily Racing Form, the decision to euthanize Giant Ryan was taken by the Parbhoo family, as it became necessary, because aside from his sesamoids injury, Giant Ryan was showing signs of laminitis in his uninjured leg.
“He was using the good foot, and that’s the foot that came down with laminitis, so sometime this afternoon was when we had to make a decision,” said Parbhoo. “Even though we love him so much, we don’t want to see him suffer.”
Despite two unplaced finishes in the 2012 season in his two starts, Giant Ryan had an exceptional 2011 season, where he managed to put together a six race winning streak including a Grade 2 which followed by a Grade 1 victory.
The son of Freud, started his 2011 season with two unplaced finishes in two allowance/optional claimers at Gulfstream Park, but he turned it up a notch at Aqueduct when he won the third race of his season, an allowance/optional claimer at about six furlongs.
Out of Dayjur mare Kheyrah, Giant Ryan won the Hamlet Stakes at Aqueduct racetrack at about 6 furlongs, and won another 6 furlong dash at Belmont Park.
It was time Calder race course to witness Giant Ryan’s awesome run, as he easily notched the six furlong long Ponche Handicap and at the same distance downed the Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap.
He went back to Belmont Park to win the biggest race of his career, when he won the Grade 1 Vosburgh.
