Giant Ryan to undergo surgery after incurring a serious injury on 9 June
Shivananda Parbhoo owned 6-year-old horse; Giant Ryan put together a 6 race winning streak last year to win the title of the New York bred champion sprinter, after finishing a disappointing eighth in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint last fall at Churchill
Downs.
This season though, he was sent to Dubai to kick start his 2012 campaign by participating in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at the Meydan over the venue’s Tapeta surface on 31 March, 2012, but came out of the race finishing fifth.
It was all set to put right for Giant Ryan, when he was going to make his 2012 debut on his favourite track in New York, the Belmont Park, where he won the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes last year.
But the start at Belmont Park – which was destined to give the sprinter his first win – was soon turned into a nightmare when he injured himself taking a bad step, while going for the lead in the stretch, running in the Grade 2 True North Handicap.
It six furlong dash was eventually won by, Caixa Eletronica, while jockey Willie Martinez pulled up Giant Ryan in distress and dismounted the horse, because the sprinter had fractured both left front sesamoids on 9 June, 2012, and remained stabled at Belmont
Park overnight.
"He's OK this morning, not good, but OK," owner Shivananda Parbhoo said. "He ate his food last night, and drank a lot of water, which is a good sign."
The son of Freud, out of mare Kheyrah by Dayjur , Giant Ryan will go under surgery for now according to his owner. The aim will be to repair the fracture, so Giant Ryan can have a stud career, but the owner insisted that nothing is for sure.
"We're waiting on a call from the doctor and then we'll ship to the hospital, most likely New Bolton (at the University of Pennsylvania)." Parbhoo said. "I'm hoping for today, but waiting for their call."

In his six race win streak last year, Giant Ryan downed the Hamlet Stakes, Ponche Handicap, Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap, and fittingly finishing the win streak with the Grade 1 Vosburgh.
