Giants' safety Antrel Rolle thinks team's defence needs improvement – NFL News
Despite the comeback victory against Dallas Cowboys in the week-14 game of the National Football League current season, New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle thinks that the team’s defence cannot always rely on the offence and needs
to display an improved game-play in the future games.
Giants were 12 points down in the final five minutes of the game, but managed to snap their four-game losing streak, thanks to the heroics of quarterback Eli Manning who initiated two touchdown-drives in to dominate the opponents.
Don’t forget the blocked kick of Dan Bailey by Jason Pierre-Paul.
Rolle thinks that relying only on Manning and offence is not going to help the Giants. The awful defensive performance is unacceptable to him.
“Offense has been playing outstanding. They’ve been saving us …” the safety said on Tuesday. “The defence hasn’t been getting the job done, which is unacceptable.”
In terms of rushing yards allowed to the opponents, the Giants are ranked at 22nd place in the league ranking. On different occasions, they have allowed other teams to penetrate their defence and make scoring plays.
Giants started the season while allowing 28 points to their opponents in the first game. The defence performed well in the next two games, giving away only 16 points in each game.
The defence failed miserably later and surrendered 27, 36 and 24 points in the week four, five and six respectively.
They got time to revise their strategy in the bye week and came back strong after that. In their first game, they restricted the opponents by allowing only 17 points, but their opponents once against managed to yield more than
20 points during the next two games.
In the week 11, the defence displayed much better game and allowed only 17 points to the opponents. Their last three games, however, were pathetic considering the defence giving away 49, 38 and 34 points respectively.
“That’s called inconsistency,” Rolle said. “You can’t have that as a playoff-contending defence. You can’t have that as a Super Bowl-contending defence. It’s not going to work that way.
Rolle, who has 77 tackles to his credit this season, believes that this performance cannot help his team in progressing forward.
“Our season will be shut short if we continue to play like that,” he said.
