Giants’ Brandon Jacobs Sports T-shirt Calling for Plaxico Burress to be Released
Plaxico Burress is expected to receive a decision regarding his application for a work release program next month. This is the second time the former New York Giant has applied for work release, a program that would allow him to serve the rest of his sentence from home.
One of Burress’ old teammates let his sentiments be known as Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was seen donning a t-shirt that read “Free 17 Let Him Ball Out."
The number 17 of course, was Burress’ number when he played for the Giants. He is currently serving a two-year sentence for attempted criminal possession of a weapon. Jacobs had the shirt custom made and wore it to a media luncheon at the Giants training camp.
"You won't see that anywhere unless you go and get it made just like I did," Jacobs said. "I just had it made. It only took a couple minutes, so you can get one, too."
Jacobs claims he had spoken to Burress recently and he hopes that Burress can return to the league, as a New York Giant.
“I'm just hoping for the best for him and his family," Jacobs added. "Hopefully, he can get out and continue his career.”
Burress was denied work release the first time he applied for it, last November, due to the nature of his crime. After serving over a full year in jail, he hopes this time, he can receive the grant. If he is granted the work release program, he would be free to sign with any NFL team. Giants GM Jerry Reese has said that the team will keep Burress in mind if he is released.
The New York Department of Correctional Services would still have to decide whether Burress would be allowed to work outside of the state, should they grant him work release.
"It would be in the discretion of the board. They take each case on an individual basis," Ben Brafman, Burress' attorney, said.
If Burress is given such permission, he won’t have to worry about further discipline by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Goodell stated that when Burress is released, he would be reinstated by the NFL and be free to sign with a team.
Burress was arrested in November 2008 after he carried a handgun with him into a Manhattan nightclub. The gun went off and caused injury to Burress’ leg. He missed the remainder of the season and the first-seeded Giants lost in their first playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants were not the same without Burress and went on to miss the playoffs last season.
