Giants’ backup QB Sorgi put on injured reserve
The New York Giants will have to look for a new backup plan as Jim Sorgi was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Sorgi tore the anterior capsule in his right shoulder in the Giants' pre-season opener against the New York Jets.
The Giants also placed wide receiver Sinorice Moss and rookie linebacker Adrian Tracy on IR as the Giants had to cut down their roster to 75 today. Moss has been battling groin problems throughout training camp and Tracy dislocated his elbow during a pre-season game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Sorgi was signed by the Giants as a free agent this off-season to backup Eli Manning, as he did for Eli’s brother Peyton in Indianapolis most of his career. Sorgi has not practiced since the injury. He has not been able to throw the ball effectively and he too felt that his season might be over.
"I don't know if their patience is wearing thin, but I'm sure it is," Sorgi said. "It's just a numbers game and getting to be that point. Like I said, it's a tough position for me to be in, and a tough position for them to be in. I don't really have much else to say."
Rhett Bomar would now move up to the second string by default unless the Giants go out and acquire a veteran. There aren’t many more quarterbacks available. The only name that people may be familiar with is JaMarcus Russell and that is very unlikely to happen.
Sorgi has never started a game in his career. The only action he saw in his six years with the Colts was when the Colts would pull their starters out of games late in the season. Sorgi would have likely not seen much playing time this season as Eli Manning has not missed a start in his entire career.
