Giants defeat Cowboys 37-34 to tie for the NFC East top-spot – NFL Week 14 Recap
New York Giants’ coach Tom Coughlin cleverly called a time-out, forcing the Dallas Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey to make a second attempt at scoring a field goal from 47 yards; something the kicker failed to do as Pierre-Paul blocked
him to lead Giants to a victory 37-34 at the Cowboys Stadium in the week-14 game of the National Football League current season on Sunday.
Dan Bailey’s perfection of kicking the balls successfully has been affected by the men shaping the game from the sidelines. Last week, it was Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, who called a time-out just when Bailey efficiently
sent the ball to its destination, only to try again and miss.
After a week, he succeeded in kicking the ball to get three points and force the game to overtime, but heard another time-out call, this time made by Giants’ coach Tom Coughlin. Bailey kicked the ball again, but it clipped off
the hands of Pierre-Paul and the National Football Conference East division tied for the first place between the two teams.
“When the kick was blocked, it was the idea we had won the game,” Coughlin said. “You can’t help it. Your mind races toward overtime. But you shore it all up for that one play, that one burst to try to block the kick. He got a
finger on it and that was enough.”
After the game, Bailey was disappointed for not getting the goal.
"I'm not happy with it," he said. "I didn’t make it."
Bailey missed the chance, but he’s not the only one to carry the burden of the defeat. Cowboys are certainly going to ponder over what went wrong with their defence, which regularly allowed the Giants to either come near or take
the lead.
In the first quarter, Tony Romo was tackled in the end zone to give two points to the Giants. Around two minutes later, Lawrence Tynes scored a 23-yard field goal to take the lead 5-0. Cowboys hit back when Romo sent a touchdown-pass
to John Phillips from 12 yards to take the lead 7-5.
Giants scored a touchdown early in the second quarter to snatch the lead from the Cowboys. However, Romo shined again and sent a nine-yard pass to Laurent Robinson to ensure touchdown. Tynes scored another field goal for Giants
and Bailey responded by scoring a field goal for Cowboys. At halftime, Cowboys were leading 17-15.
Dan Bailey scored another field goal in the third quarter to extend the lead 20-15. At 4:30, Eli Manning spotted Mario Manningham from 47 yards and successfully sent a touchdown-pass to put Giants in-charge 22-20.
Cowboys dominated post part of the final quarter and scored two touchdowns. With less than five minutes on the clock, Cowboys were leading 34-22. At 3:14, Manning sent an eight-yard pass to Jake Ballard to reduce the lead 34-29.
Later, Giants scored another touchdown coupled with a two-point conversion to put their noses in front 37-34.
Cowboys initiated a final drive with only 46 seconds left on the clock. Romo gained more than 40 yards to set Bailey up for a 47-yard field goal, which would have sent the game to overtime. With six seconds left, Bailey successfully
kicked the ball to get three points, but the move was nullified as Giants' coach Coughlin had called a time-out. When the game resumed, Bailey tried again, but his kick was blocked and the game went away from the Cowboys.
Cowboys and Giants both now have seven victories and six defeats to their credit. Both the teams have got equal chances to reach the postseason by topping the division. They are going to face other one more time this season to
decide their fates.
