Giants roar back in to first with 13-0 win over Cubs
Madison Bumgarner did not need his best stuff with the run support that he got Thursday, but he went ahead and brought it anyway. The young starting pitcher improved his record to 6-6 on the season with a 13-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
For the second time in four starts he kept opposing batters from scoring; he’s only allowed three earned runs in four starts in September. He went seven innings, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out nine.
“I feel like I was keeping the ball down a lot better today than I was the last few games,” he said. “I’m trying to keep the same approach each time I go out there. I feel good about going out there and giving us a chance to win.”
The offense got on Ryan Dempster early and knocked him out of the game before he could finish the second inning.
“He (Dempster) didn’t look comfortable to me from the get-go,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said. “He’ll be fine next outing.
A nine run explosion in the second inning by the Giants practically put the game out of reach after it had barely gotten started. The highlight of the inning was Juan Uribe. He started off the inning with a two run shot over the left field wall. Uribe ended
up closing the inning in fine fashion with a grand slam to put the Giants in front 10-0.
“He is a guy who can do a lot of damage,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s knocked in a lot of runs for us this year. We needed a big game from somebody and we got it from him tonight.”
Guillermo Mota and Dan Runzler each pitched an inning in relief of Bumgarner to preserve the win for the team
With the win the Giants improved to 86-67 on the season and moved back in to first place with a half game lead over the San Diego Padres. The two teams close out the regular season with a three game series against each other.
San Francisco will have the chance to put an end to the Colorado Rockies playoff hopes this weekend when the two teams meet for a three game series. The Rockies sit in third place in the NL West, but are only three games back.
Tim Lincecum is scheduled to take the mound for the Giants on Friday with Jhoulys Chacin set to do for the Rockies.
