Gibson urges Caribbean cricket fans to retain faith in team – Cricket News Update
Following the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ottis-Delroy-Gibson-c80358 has admitted that while criticism from fans back home is not pleasant, the process of getting the long-beleaguered team back on track is bound to take some
time.
“It's not nice, especially when it's coming from your own people,” Gibson said, regarding the criticism the team has recently attracted for their performances during their tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 so far. Prominent among the critics is former Windies pacer turned
cricket broadcaster http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382 (whom he claims is extra baggage and does not deserve to remain on the Test team, let alone serve as captain).
The tourists from the Caribbean kicked off their visit with a 3-match Test series, but have been unable to secure a win in either of the two matches played so far. The first match saw them suffering a 5-wicket loss at Lord’s, while the second game culminated
in a 9-wicket defeat for Sammy’s men at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
Advocating patience with the young side, Gibson claimed that it was unreasonable to expect to immediately undo the decline the team had fallen into over the past few years.
“It's very difficult to expect you are going to reverse 15 years or 20 years of decline in two-and-a-half, three years of trying to put the right sort of processes in place.”
The Windies reigned supreme in the world of cricket from the mid 1970s to the early 1990s. However, a failure to plan ahead, mismanagement of high-profile players, and a host of other issues have reduced them to a struggling side.
Despite this, West Indies cricket fans have found hope in the new, young side which has been displaying a competitiveness and fighting spirit which had been lacking in the team for a long time. Their recent series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 saw the team putting up
an unexpected fight and ending the limited-overs series on a draw.
While a Tests series win in England is out of their grasp, there is one Test match remaining, and Gibson pointed out that the knowledge of their past triumphs would enable the team to salvage their pride and see the challenge through.
“… we are very proud of our history and that we were once the number one team in the world and that's something we take a lot of pride in,” he said.
“We'll go to Edgbaston in a week's time and put our pride before our performance and see how we come out.”
The last Test of the series is scheduled to take place at in Birmingham on June 7.
