Gideon Louw earns Men’s 100m freestyle gold: Day five - South African LC Nationals
Gideon A Louw of NTS-NT earned gold medal of Men’s 100m freestyle on day five of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Friday, April 20.
The 24-year-old Louw stunned the aquatic crowd with his exceptional efforts in the playoff of the 100m event, where he upset his challengers by winning gold medal of the discipline.
Louw faced strong competition from his following swimmer, Roland Schoeman in the double-lap event, but with his alluring efforts, he snared top spot of the discipline as he touched the wall with an effort of 49.23 seconds.
Louw was trailed by Schoeman, who stayed just 0.02 seconds slower from overpowering his efforts and emerged on the finishing wall with the timing of 49.25 seconds for silver medal.
The 31-year-old Schoeman was chased by Darian Townsend of KZNA-KZ, who stood nearly 0.05 seconds slower and proved his eligibility for bronze medal by posting a time of 49.30 seconds.
Townsend, the 27-year-old was chased by Graeme J Moore of CGA-CG, who remained 0.26 seconds away from securing third position of the discipline and hit the finishing wall with the timing of 49.56 seconds for fourth position.
The 23-year-old Moore was chased by Leith Shankland of KZNA-KZ, who occupied fifth position of the discipline by submitting a time of 49.82 seconds.
Shankland, the 20-year-old was followed closely by his team-member, Brad E Tandy, who completed his swim in sixth best place by touching the wall with the timing of 50.05 seconds.
The 20-year-old Tandy was trailed by Jean Basson of CGA-CG, who proved his eligibility for the seventh finest spot of the race by reporting an effort of 50.17 seconds.
Basson, the 24-year-old Basson was trailed by Gregory Widmer of NTS-NT, who failed to make a significant improvement in his timing and completed his swim in eighth best place by hitting the wall with the timing of 50.49 seconds.
The session ended after the completion of all planned events in Men and Women’s category whereas the position holders were invited on the medal rostrum for their notable efforts at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
