Question:

Gift etiquette in foreign countries like China: What are rare gifts to bring from US? Any no-no's?

I saw in the news today that Godiva chocolate is a good gift to bring to China because it is very hard to find it there. They also said DON'T give clocks, wathces, or mirrors because it is considered bad luck to them.

What are some similar, rare gifts that an American can bring to other foreign countries in Asia (e.g., Japan, South Korea), Europe (France, Italy, Spain), South America, and anywhere else you know the answers for?

What are some things you should absolutely NOT give due to their culture's beliefs and traditions?

Thanks!!

  1. If you go to your local political office, they will give you stuff for free. Pins, patches, stickers with the American flag and other iconic US images.  These are great to give out, especially to children.

I wouldn't travel with fancy chocolates -- they rarely arrive well.
