Gift idea for an 8 year old Japanese child?

Question

My married in uncles daughter comes to the US once a year she has an 8 year old little girl, my daughter would like to get her a gift seeing they always bring her something from Japan every year! What would be a good idea I wanted it to be a surprise her mom is the kind of person who would not tell you because she feels she does not need a gift.. So any ideas would be great not sure what she would be in to.. Thanks so much..

Get her a fake makeup kit with some costume Jewelery. And maybe some dress up clothes!
