Gift idea needed for a veteran!?

Question

Hi there. I'm a female and I'm enrolled in a Humanities class at college. In October we're going to a Veteran's hospital to visit people whom are living there, these are people with spinal cord injuries.

We have to make them a gift, but I have no idea what to make mine and I won't be able to meet them before I give it to them. She said it's more then likely going to be a man, but could be a woman. What kind of a gift could I make? that'll show I put a lot of effort into it?

As a veteran I can say that reading material is always good to give anyone.  I wouldn't suggest books on the military.  A box of candy is always good.  If they have access to a tv/dvd player you could get him/her a movie.  Stationary is also a good gift.  You could also go with a sketch book and pencils or charcoal.  On that same note you could give him/her a journal and a nice pen to go with it.  I hope those helped.  Most of all, a good gift is just to sit and visit with them.  I was in a military hospital for a long time and just having someone to talk to was a great boost.

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything but just because they are a veteran doesn't mean they need a "veteran gift". Try and think of something you could give anyone, like a basket of candy or treats for example.

Knit a blanket

Embroider a pillow case

Give them a selection of classic books

A basket of everyday items, with a few frivilous ones thrown in, might also be great. Like a small thing of hand lotion, toothpaste, a gossip magazine, a car magazine, a classic paperback, a box of herbal tea, a small thing of chocolates, and a calling card.  

You could also get a bunch of people in your neighborhood to sign a piece of paper thanking the veteran for fighting for our country.  Make a collage of photos to apply to the paper/poster so they know who is thanking them.

Make a nice bookmark or put a plant in a nice pot for them.
