Gift issues for upcoming debut/18th birthday?

The thing is I'm going to be having my debut in the Philippines and I'm having problems with gifts. My mom was talking to some of the relatives saying "I think it's more practical if we just say to give money instead of gifts since it'll be an issue bringing them back home."

I was thinking that's not classy at all to be asking for money. But then again it is practical since I'll be having trouble bringing presents back from 200 people/about 40 families back to America.

At the last debut I went to, there was a box for people to just put their envelopes full of money to put into the box.

Does anybody else have any suggestions? I might just follow the box example, but if you have any other ideas that would be helpful.

   I never give money as a gift. What i do is find out some of the persons favourite stores they shop in and go in and get  a gift certificate in the amount  the gift and gift wrap would have cost. Another idea is a gift certificate for two at their favourite restaurant. How about a gift certificate for a pedicure and manicure, or a few friends  get together and give the   girl a day at the Spa when she gets home. A few friends can give a free 6 month certificate at her favourite gym.Another idea is pay for her next hair appointment. all small envelopes but filled with wonderful surprises.
