I received a letter stating that I was eligible to join the GT program. I was so happy and excited. That is until my mom saw the letter and told me, “are you sure you want to do this, I don’t think you can, you are not that smart, you are only going to embarrass yourself”. That was so mean of her to say but o well. My question is if any of you has taken a GT test or were/ are in GT how was the test? What did they ask you?

  1. Good for you, don't let you mom discourage you!  Best of luck to you.

  2. We have a thing in our school called Gifted and Talented too - I'm not sure if it's the same as yours, but don't let your mum discourage you! Yup, I'm sure she means well but Gifted and Talented ain't for superwhizzes - I'm not one of them, but I still got invited to join. One of our day outs was to a university - it was like a science day with lots of challenges and activities. It sounds a bit geeky but you're not on your own - and it's good fun.

In fact I say you should give it a shot! I think you'd do quite well, and if you are "eligible" then of course you're capable, I'm sure! Go for it and good luck! Just enjoy it :)

  3. if they think you are eligible than you must be. they should know better than your mom. GO FOR IT!

  4. the gifted and talented program is definitely something i would do no matter what condescending things your mom says! i took the test in 2nd grade and got in to the gifted and talented program they call it GATE (gifted and talented education) and then in 7th grade they said i had scored really well and i had a chance to retake the test to get into seminar which is higher than gate. i am now in seminar and i am so glad that i took this amazing opportunity! the test ask you questions with puzzles and pictures its called the RAVEN (i don't know what that stands for) and it tests how smart you are not how much you know about stuff. so if you mom doesn't think your smart enough she is underestimating you because the test, tests how smart you are and that means the GATE program is right for you! good luck! and definitely say yes to that letter!

  5. I work in a school.  Our TAG program identifies students with many talents not just academic.  Maybe you are selected because you think outside the box - not just because of grades and such.  Could be an awesome experience for you!  But may require outside work as well.  GO for it!

  6. Hi Kate,

It's fantastic that you got this opportunity. Not many students get the chance to even get tested. I suggest you try the test, that is what will tell you if you are qualified for the program - not your mom. Believe me.

I joined the Gifted Program when I was in grade 4 and stayed until I graduated high school. I was tested in grade 3 - simply put, it is an IQ test. If you are gifted or higher (130+ IQ) you are accepted into the program. This test is done in a private room, with no one but the person giving you the test and you. Regardless if you fail or succeed, none of your peers will know.

There are many types of gifted students, and not all of them excel at everything. I would suggest for you to just give it a shot. There is no harm in that.

  7. you should definitely take this as your first opportunity to get ahead of students, and to take an advantage over other students..

talk to your mom about what's going on, and the benefits, and necessarily you don't have to be the smartest...it's a class where you learn, not automatically tested..

just be creative on the test is all...

  8. I did, back in the day.  There was logic things and artsy things, and a plain old interview.

The biggest thing is to show that you think.  Even if you don't know an answer, just say what you're thinking and what process you have going on in your head.  Getting the wrong answer, but being able to show that you're working through something, is just as good as getting the right answer for most people.  Remember that most students don't think.  If you do, and can show it, the sky's the limit.

  9. your mom is a witch with a B
