Does anyone have a list of projects or activities that can be done with gifted students ages 6-8. I'm a teacher in a school where the gt program stinks and serves no support for these kids. Any cool websites would help me too.

  1. try looking up projects for gifted kids here;

    libraryspot.com/features/invisibleweb....

Kiddos to you for searching out what your school does not offer,we need more teachers of your calliber! Thanks!

  2. If there talented in mathematics, games that use numbers and problem solving are the best, however I recommend you make it fun "If Car 1 told Car 2 that six wheels was stolen..." considering their ages etc.

Gifted and talented children are very important in the rural times these young generations are facing and encouraging them to advance their talents is a topic I give my full support to.

    Daniel.

  3. The first few answers you got above... ugh...

Brainstorm with the kids to come up with a project (or several if you want to divide into teams) that they can work on...

Make it something with a tangible result.

Something that at the end: you can say, parents can say, administrators can say - hey look what these kids did.

Something that at the end: The kids can say, at least to themselves - look what I helped accomplish.

These are smart kids - they know busy work from something meaningful.

    Keyword here is meaningful.

    Ideas:

I helped a Beta Club publish a book called: "How to Survive Middle School."  It had a full color cover, illustrations and was about 30 pages.  Project cost: $500 for which I helped get a grant.  Enough books were printed to give to every incoming middle school students.

Figure out a unique way to raise money and start some kind of small annual scholarship.

Figure out a way to get the kids involved in some meaningful community service work.

Get the kids working towards the Congressional Award for Youth.  (See Link)

Make sure that those who qualify get the Presidential Academic Award  at the end of 6th, 8th ( and 12th) grades.  (See Link)

Get them out visiting college campuses.

Start a Gavel Club with them (Jr. Toastmasters).

Make it real.  Make it meaningful.  No puzzles!!!!!

  4. Wow, it's difficult to read through the responses you just got without wanting to cry.

I was in a gifted and talented program in elementary school that really didn't do anything.  In fact, typically I was allowed to just skip work sometimes.  When we took times tables quizzes I just got to sit at my desk and do nothing.

Things that I would have loved to have done were to help someone who needed help with it, go to a higher level math class during some of the time or just read.  Those are your best options, and I'd highly recommend the reading part, get some books from higher grades, novels and definitely something scientific, science gets left out of elementary school so much now.

I teach high school, so the websites i would stick up would be too advanced for 6-8 year olds, but look at the science and math standards for 3rd and 4th grade.  I think there is a lot of biology, and just search google for some websites.  You'll find stuff.

  5. I agree - thank you for wanting to serve these kids.  As the mom of a highly gifted kid, I know how little support gifted kids get in many schools.

The Hoagies Gifted site is incredible - I get much of my son's activities from there.  You may also want to look into some thematic units, as they tend to go deeper into topics and allow kids to approach them in different ways.  This is something that has allowed my son to really get excited about what he learns - he doesn't have to just fill out the worksheet and move on, he can really dig into whatever it is he's learning about.

Something you may want to look into, either on its own or integrated into the above ideas, is lapbooking.  It's largely used by the homeschool community but is making an entrance in public and private school classrooms as well.  I've seen kids of all ranges - profoundly gifted to severely LD - make great strides while working with lapbooks.  For gifted kids, it allows them to research or learn at their own level while making a project that is uniquely their own.

    Hope that helps!
