Team Great Britain boss Stuart Pearce has hinted that the Manchester United legend could be handed the captain’s armband for this summer’s Olympic tournament.
For all his subtleties and talent, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wales-c3041 never stood a chance amongst the giants of Europe and the winger himself channelled his energies into his club career.
However he still remains one of the most highly respected figures on the pitch and expressed his desire to represent the combined home nations side in this year’s Olympics. His dream was quickly turned into reality after Stuart Pearce drafted him into the line-up, although Giggs’ reunion with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Beckham-c10432 was not to be.
Alongside http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Craig-Bellamy-c9471, he is one of the four Welsh players selected and is being carefully considered as captain due to his experience at the highest level of football.
Giggs has led Manchester United to numerous titles with the armband on and with his calm demeanour would be a great choice that would satisfy everyone involved.
The player has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Old Trafford and knows how to get on the winning end of things, making him a favourite to land the Great Britain captaincy for London 2012.
However coach Pearce has refused to fully acknowledge Giggs as the leading candidate and said that he will only formally announce the skipper, when he has talked to the player first and if he agrees to it.
“It will be a fantastic opportunity to captain this once in a lifetime team that we are putting together. The first time we come together I will sit him down and tell him.”
The trainer also added that the tournament could take a heavy toll on the older players, but was confident that the likes of Giggs and Bellamy could look after themselves properly.
“It might be but it’s a big ask for all the players not just the over-age ones. This is going to be a scenario with the games coming thick and fast. The one thing you can guarantee with regard to those two individuals, they’re ultimate professionals.”
“They know exactly their own bodies, they know exactly the preparation that is good for them,” he said.
Great Britain start proceedings with a tough encounter against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Senegal-c3001 on the 26th of July.
