Gil/Gimeno-Traver overpower Andujar/Berlocq in the title-round – VTR Open 2012
Unseeded tandem of Portugal’s Frederico Gil and Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver shocked the fourth seeds, Pablo Andujar of Spain and Carlos Berlocq of Argentina, at the VTR Open 2012 on Sunday. They clobbered a 1-6, 7-5, 12-10 score line to grab their maiden
title together at this first clay court tournament which is part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event.
The Portuguese-Spaniard duo showed tremendous abilities and co-ordination to upset the seeds in an hour and 22 minutes battle. Gil was duelling at his first ATP World Tour doubles final while his partner was featuring at his second final.
"It’s a good feeling,” said the booming Spaniard of the final showdown. "I’m very happy for me and also for Frederico. It was a very tough match. We were 6-1 down in 15 minutes and everything was going so fast. At the end we could turn it up and win the
title."
The delighted Portuguese added, "As Danny said, we played well this week and I’m happy with the way I’m playing. I’m feeling happy because we won our first ATP title. It was a great week here and I’ll keep working for the next tournament."
The outstanding seeded team went berserk in the opening set as they cruised to hold their entire serves with facing any barrier. Andujar and Berlocq then cashed in three out of five break opportunities to bagged the set with an assuring 6-1 success.
Gil and Gimeno-Traver re-focused in the following set and after exchanging a break, they maintained consistency in their game and held remaining serves. The Portuguese-Spaniard collaboration then earned the breakthrough in the end and clinched the equaliser
with a 7-5 score line.
The winning combination of Gil and Gimeno-Traver kept their momentum into the super tie-breaker. They clobbered a poor first serve share of 55 percent as opposed to their rivals’ 91 percent but managed to edge past the seeds in the end. The duo superbly
registered four out of six points on it and sealed the decider with a 12-10 win.
The high flying pair upset the third seeded Spaniards, David Marrero and Pere Riba, en route to final. They also showed amazing synchronisation and dominated throughout the tournament.
Earlier, Berlocq lost to his top seeded compatriot, Juan Monaco, in troublesome three sets at the singles event of this clay court tournament. The poor Argentinean sought nine break opportunities but converted one to his advantage, subsequently suffering
a 3-6, 7-6(1), 1-6 shock in two hours and 46-minutes.
