Giles Smith occupies Men’s 100m butterfly gold: Day one – 2012 Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational
Giles Smith of University of Arizona occupied gold medal of the Men’s 100m butterfly on first day of the 2012 Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational in Nebraska on Friday, June 8.
The 20-year-old Smith experienced strong competition from Masayuki Kishida of Tucson Ford Deal in the double lap discipline but with his invincible efforts, he managed to reach the podium for gold medal.
He stayed marginally slower from his strongest competitor in the first half but elevated his pace in the second lap and posted a time of 53.24 seconds for the title of the event.
The champion was followed by Kishida, who remained only 0.25 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and posted a time of 53.49 seconds for silver medal of the event.
Third position of the discipline was secured by Byron Butler of Club Hawkeye-IA, who stayed almost one second ahead and settled on the finishing end with an effort of 55.31 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Brian Stevens of University of Arizona, who stayed 0.11 seconds apart and clocked an effort of 55.42 seconds for fourth position of the event.
Stevens was trailed by his team-member, Cory Chitwood, who stayed 0.18 seconds apart and posted a time of 55.60 seconds for fifth position of the discipline.
The 23-year-old Chitwood remained 0.04 seconds faster from Stephen Yemm of NASA Wildcat Aquatics, who posted a time of 55.64 seconds for sixth position of the event.
Yemm was chased by Ivan Tolic of Tucson Ford Deal, who remained 0.10 seconds slower and clocked an effort of 55.74 seconds for seventh position.
Last position of the discipline was obtained by Mitchell Taylor of Club Hawkeye-IA, who tried hard to surpass his foregoing finisher but failed to match his pace. Taylor remained 0.38 seconds away from his preceding swimmer and ended his swim in a time of 56.12 seconds for eighth position.
Furthermore, the session concluded after the completion of all planned events while the championship will end on June 10 after the conclusion of all races. Furthermore, winners collected medals at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
