Gilles Muller crashes out by Niels Desein in pre-quarters – ATP Roller Open 2012 CH
Top seed, Gilles Muller from Luxembourg, was edged out by the Belgian challenger, Niels Desein, in brutal straight sets at the ATP Roller Open 2012 on Thursday. He suffered a 4-6, 4-6 loss against the world number 284 in the second round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event held in Petange, Luxembourg.
The local number one, Muller showed dismal performance throughout the battle, eventually exiting in the round of 16 at this hard court event. As a result, Desein set up a quarter-final date with the fifth seed, Edouard Roger-Vasselin from France.
The 25-year-old Belgian made a convincing start after entering the Luxembourgian courts. After Muller held his opening serve, the lower ranked contender bagged the following three games with a single break opportunity and took a 3-1 lead. Desein smoothly
swiped his entire serves without encountering any breakpoint and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 66th in the world, Muller carried his loosing ways in the following set. He again gifted away his serve in the third game and fell at 1-3. The Luxembourg managed to keep his remaining serves with poise but the initial loss cost him the
set and the match. Muller squandered the lone break opportunity he sought and dusted away one out of two breakpoints he faced.
The underdog on the other side of net advanced into the semi-finals where the French seed awaits. Roger-Vasselin required one hour and 39 minutes formulating a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 score line against Switzerland’s Adrien Bossel. He withstood 13 aces and capitalised
on three out of six break chances to progress.
Seeded sixth in this event, Horacio Zeballos, will accompany Desein in the proceeding round. He made an epic comeback from a set down to outsmart Belgium’s Maxime Authom in a three-set thriller. The Argentinean seed lost his serve once but cashed in three
out of 10 break opportunities, subsequently sealing the deal with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 score line in almost two hours.
Zeballos will face off the second seed, Jurgen Zopp, who dumped Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen in straight sets to reach this spot.
