Gilles Muller edges past Eduardo Schwank to reach quarters – Serbia Open 2012
Seeded eighth in the tournament, Gilles Muller stomped over the Argentinean qualifier, Eduardo Schwank, in straight sets at the Serbia Open 2012 on Wednesday. He penned down a 6-3, 7-6(0) victory against the world number 179 to charge into the final eight
at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Belgrade, Serbia.
The Luxembourgian tennis ace thrashed Schwank after cashing in both break chances at the SRPC Milan Gale Muskatirovic. After overpowering the qualifier in one hour and 34 minutes, Muller progressed into the quarter-finals where second seeded Andreas Seppi
awaits him.
Muller stormed into the Serbian clay courts and broke the Argentinean’s serve in the second game to leap to a 3-0 lead. He then maintained consistency in his game and swiped in remaining serves to seal the opener by winning six games to three.
The Luxembourgian veteran carried his rhythm in the second set and earned the coveted break in the fifth game to put his nose ahead for the first time in this set. He lost his edge in the eighth game but remained calm and consequently enforced a tie-breaker.
Muller went berserk in it and stroke out all the points to formulate a 7-6(0) score line.
Overall, the 62nd ranked Muller jolted down a poor first serve share of 47 per cent in contrast with his rival’s 72 per cent but superbly marked 30 out of 35 points on it. He also fired eight aces and brushed off three out of four breakpoints
he came across, ultimately pocketing the match with conviction.
Muller’s next opponent, Seppi, dumped the Croatian star, Ivan Dodig, in straight sets to set-up this meeting. The Italian seed, overcame six aces hammered by Dodig and capitalised on five out of seven break opportunities to formulate a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The fourth seed, David Nalbandian, will accompany Muller in the quarter-finals. He took down Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene in straight sets in one hour and 20 minutes to book this spot. The Argentinean lost his serve once but broke Bedene’s serve four times to
manipulate a 6-4, 6-3 success.
