Gilles Simon slays Frederico Gil in round two – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
French tennis ace, Gilles Simon, outfoxed the Portuguese qualifier, Frederico Gil, in just 63 minutes and cleared the second round of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters on Wednesday. He gobbled up the win in straight sets 6-3, 6-0;
wasting no time at all to devastate the helpless visitor.
It was a stunning display from the local hero who was a break down early in the match but bounced back in emphatic fashion to oust the qualifier. He lost the opening serve game; winning just one point in it but gusted away his
rival in the fourth game and bagged the first breakpoint of the match. Scores were levelled at 2-2.
Simon continued to rule the show and registered a thumping serve hold to take a lead for the first time in the set. He broke serve to consolidate his position and introduced a day light between the scores with a serve hold in the
seventh game. Scores were 5-2 in his favour and Gil was in no position to make any sort of comeback in the game.
With no more breakthroughs in the remaining games of the set, the 15th ranked French ran away with the show giving a very tough time to his competitor. He looked to make a mark and send a message to his critics that
he is still booming despite entering the 28th year of his life.
The second set was a bagel for him. He wasted no opportunity at all to pound on the Portuguese who was absolutely clueless about how to tackle the onslaught of Simon. With a couple of aces and some terrific down the line winners,
the French starlet bagged the second set winning 28 points out of 41 played.
Next up for the local hero is either the Serb seventh seed visitor, Janko Tipsarevic, or the Spanish tennis professional, Albert Montanes. Both these players will battle it out in the second round to book a date with Simon. It
will be enthralling battle if the Serb tennis icon is not a victim of any sort of upset at the hands of the talented Spaniard.
