Gillespie earmarks Starc as “serious wicket-taker” for Australia – Cricket News Update
Former Australian pacer and current head coach of English County club Yorkshire, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-Aaron-Starc-c76392 as a potential pace powerhouse for Australia in the future, claiming the youngster has what it takes to surpass the 200 Test wickets
mark.
“He showed glimpses of how good he can be at Yorkshire and since he's made his Australian debut he's shown every time he's gone out there that he's the real deal,” Gillespie told
Fairfax, going on to insist that he had “absolutely no doubt” Starc could become the 14th Australian in the history of the game to reach the 200 Test wickets mark.
“He'll play a lot of cricket for Australia [and] he can be a serious wicket-taker for a long time,” added the former paceman, who is himself sixth on the list of Australia's Test wicket-takers, with 259 scalps from 71 Tests.
Starc made his Test debut against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 in December last year, and has claimed a total of 10 wickets in the 4 Test matches he has played so far. The 22-year-old’s recent burst in form can be traced back to his stint with Yorkshire during the winter,
where he admitted to having honed his craft after he was forced to step out of his comfort zone, and deal with unfamiliar conditions.
“He does have all the attributes, he's got the mental capacity to handle the rigours of international cricket,” Gillespie said. “You know the skill's there, he works hard at his game. The effort he puts in to becoming a better player is absolutely sensational.”
In addition to his time with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s pace battery for their upcoming Test
series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in November.
Starc, who is currently in South Africa with his Big Bash team, the Sydney Sixers, for the Champions League T20, played a starring role during Australia’s tour of the UAE in August/September, during which they played a series of 3 ODIs, and 3 T20Is. Battling
unfamiliar conditions and irregular match timings, Starc claimed 9 wickets during the ODI series, and 4 scalps during the 2 T20Is he played. He also claimed 10 wickets during Australia’s recent World T20 campaign.
With the final line-up for the crucial home series against the Proteas as yet undecided, it appears to be a toss-up between youngsters Starc and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BW-Hilfenhaus-c1204. However, with conditions
being seamer-friendly, and spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nathan-Michael-Lyon-c78822 being out of form, there remains the chance that Australia might opt for a 4-man pace attack.
