Gillian Ryan claims Women’s 400m freestyle gold – Swimming news
Gillian Ryan of North Baltimore claimed gold medal of Women’s 400m freestyle on day two of the 2013 Arena International Grand Prix at George F. Haines International Swim Center on Friday, May 31.
The 17-year-old Ryan devastated hopes of her opponents in the mediocre distance event, as she proved her mettle for the top spot of the event.
She faced tough competition from her following swimmer in the eight-lap event but she managed to defend her fastest qualification effort by securing the title with the timing of 4 minutes and 11.83 seconds.
The gold medallist was traced by Alexandra Komarnycky of Island Swimming, who was only 0.10 seconds slower and surfaced on the finishing end for fourth position with an effort of 4 minutes and 11.93 seconds.
The second best finisher was traced by Allison Schmitt of North Baltimore, who remained only 0.04 seconds slower from her former finisher and touched the wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 11.97 seconds.
The third position holder remained 0.14 seconds apart and tapped the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 12.11 seconds for fourth place.
Fifth fastest spot of the event was secured by Shannon Vreeland of Athens Bulldog Swim Club, who was only 0.05 seconds apart and posted a time of 4 minutes and 14.09 seconds.
Similarly, Vreeland was chased by Chelsea Chenault of Terrapins Swim Team, who was almost two body lengths behind and ended her swim in a time of 4 minutes and 12.26 seconds for sixth place.
The 18-year-old Chenault was chased by Andrea Taylor of Una Stan-PC, who remained only 0.05 seconds slower from upsetting her former finisher. Taylor remained marginally slower from Chenault and hit the finishing end with the timing
of 4 minutes and 14.14 seconds.
Taylor was followed by Barbara Jardin of PPO, who was 0.16 seconds apart and clocked a time of 4 minutes and 14.30 seconds for eighth place.
Furthermore, Ryan was extremely delighted with her top finish in the race and stressed that she would try to do the same at elite levels. In addition, the winners received medals and accolades after the race.
