Gilroy High boys volleyball team loses to Saint Francis on Thursday in Central Coast Section Div 1
Thursday night did not bring the joy the Gilroy High boys volleyball team thought it would as it marked the end of their season.
The Gilroy team who have had a thrilling season so far were defeated in a clean sweep by Saint Francis. The match in which Gilroy suffered a defeat was part of the Central Coast Section Division 1 playoffs. After the three back-to-back losses, Gilroy will
not be advancing on to the semi finals of the tournament.
The defeat comes with much disappointment as well as frustration for Gilroy as they had been going strong lately. Gilroy had bagged the championship title of the Tri-County Athletic League last Friday in a spectacular show of volleyball skill. That was the
reason why the team left their home court after losing the quarter-final amidst loud applause from the audience.
Handing out a defeat to the Tri-County League champions by winning three consecutive sets has given the confidence boaster Saint Francis needed to propel them towards the semi finals of the playoffs. By the time that the night was out and Saint Francis was
celebrating their well-earned win, the scoreboard read as 25-18, 25-21 and 25-18.
The total number of wins that the number fifth ranked Mustangs has been able to record in this season so far amount to be 21. These victories have been achieved at the cost of undergoing seven losses in all. In contrast to the performance statistics of Gilroy,
the number four ranked St. Francis has been able to bag themselves a total number of 28 wins in this season so far. These victories have been secured at the expense of suffering defeats that total to be commendably low at the figure of eight.
As soon as the first set of the match started, Gilroy was able to obtain a lead. However, they were not able to maintain their advantage and let St. Francis cruise past and take charge. Once the Mustangs lost the lead, they could not get it back and lost
the first set of the game at 18-25.
The second set of the match unfolded in a similar fashion as the first one. The Mustangs got the lead early on only to lose it and the set at 21-25. It was only a matter of time before St. Francis won the third set of the game at 25-18.
“At this point, getting into CCS, we are fortunate to get here. Everybody's going to be good,” GHS coach Scott Martin said. “We knew they were going to have size. We knew they were going to be good hitters. The game plan didn't change for us. We wanted to
come in here and do our things right. They did a good job of taking away our options at times and there were a few errors on our part at bad times.”
