Gilroy defeat Balers in Tri-County Athletic Volleyball League match
A gruelling match took place on Thursday between two very competitive teams. The game marked the initiation of the Tri-County Athletic League. Both Gilroy and Balers faced each other with professionalism and a high level of skill. Brilliant play by both
the teams stretched the match on to five sets.
In the end, Gilroy won the day with a scorecard of 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 15-10.
Prominent in the ranks of the winning team were the names of Dietrich Baumgartner and AJ Bean. The two players who made all the difference for the Mustangs in the decisive fifth set of the game. Baumgartner and Bean did not let the loss of the third and
fourth sets affect their game and kept their performance level high. Both the players inspired confidence in the rest of the team. Baumgartner and Bean were able to keep the score board ticking and put the pressure on the Balers by contributing a combined
number of 15 points to Gilroy.
Mustangs Coach Scott Martin praised both the players, saying “They are our horses. We can't go away from them, especially in Game 5. They stepped up.”
When the match started, Gilroy were all pumped up for action. This showed in their play and vigilance. The Mustangs were in control of the game most of the time. At no point were the Balers able to maintain any concrete ground in the first set. As a result,
the Mustangs secured a win quite easily by 25-20.
Gilroy did not let go of the momentum built in the first set of the game and were able to assert themselves in the second game as well. The Balers could not do much to rattle the Mustangs, who kept charging forwards relentlessly. By the time the second set
reached its close, Gilroy had bagged another set at 25-19.
After the first two sets, the game saw a sharp twist and the tables turned in favour of the Balers. After having experienced a deficit of two sets, they were able to step up their game and respond positively. Before the Mustangs could recuperate, the third
set was tied at 15-all. The Balers pushed themselves and ended up winning the set at 25-22. Similarly, the fourth set of the game saw improved play by the Balers and the Mustangs could not take up the challenge. Gilroy lost the fourth set by 23-25.
Despite having lost the fifth set and consequently the match, the Balers coach, Erica Richardson, is not disappointed by her team.
“I think the win will come,” she said. “I’m very glad we play Gilroy again.”
