Zenyatta or Goldikova? Which should you take on?
That was the conundrum that faced the connections of Gio Ponti when they pre-entered the five-year-old for two races at this year’s Breeders’ Cup meeting at Churchill Downs this weekend. Owner Shane Ryan, of Castleton Lyons, had the choice of the Mile or going for the $5million jackpot in the Classic.
But that would have meant taking on Zenyatta, to whom Gio Ponti finished second in last year’s race on the synthetic Pro-Ride track at Santa Anita. This year would have provided the added challenge of what would have been Gio Ponti’s debut run on dirt. In the end Ryan and trainer Christophe Clement have elected to stick to familiar turf.
