Giorgia Bronzini wins second consecutive UCI World Championship title - Cycling News

The Italian professional cyclists Giorgia Bronzini
won the mass sprint of the Women’s road race to retain her UCI World Championships on Sunday, September 25. The race started and finished in Rudersdal.
Bronzini showed her superior skills in the final circuit and covered the distance of 140 kilometres in 3 hours, 21 minutes and 28 seconds. The Italian beat Marianne Vos (Netherlands) in the final kilometres and Vos took her fifth silver medal in row at the
World Championships.
Giorgia told the media, "In the finale, I had Baccaille, and I asked her to start the sprint early and strong. I believed in the race and the podium, but I thought the jersey was impossible because my season had been low, but maybe when I wear the Italian
jersey, I feel something, like I have more energy."
Vos failed to hold her pace and crossed the finish line with tears in her eyes after retaining the runner-up spot with the same timing of the Italian ahead of Ina Teutenberg (Germany). The 2008 World Champion Nicole Cooke was in fourth place.
There were minor attacks in the race while Canada, Sweden, USA and Australia all managed to get away ahead of the peloton. Great Britain rider Emma Pooley increased her pace and began stringing out the bunch. In the final three laps, all the cyclists were
holding a pace throughout the race while Sweden made a move into the front.
Amber Neben managed to gain a lead of two seconds and her move was quickly neutralised. Nonetheless, the Italian increased her pace and launched an attack to cross the final sprint to retain her World title.
Recently, Bronzini took first place in the Liberty Classic as in 2009 she took the three stages of Tour de PEI and two stages of Ladies Tour of Qatar.
Vos was really disappointed as she said, "Giorgia is a fantastic sprinter, she won in a great way."
Lucinda Brand (Netherlands), Anita Rita Kenyo (Hungary), Michelle Lauge (Denmark) and Isabelle Söderberg (Sweden) were disqualified.
