Giovanni Manuel wins last stage of the Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid – Cycling news
Giovanni Manuel Baez Alvarez of the EPM-UNE team won the third and final stage of the Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid on Sunday.
The race started in Colmenar Viejo and ended at Puerto de la Morcuera. Giovanni Manuel took a total of 2 hours, 59 minutes and 22 seconds to cover the distance of 117.9 kilometres.
The race leader Rui Alberto Faria Da Costa of the Movistar team was in second place 14 seconds behind Giovanni. Javier Moreno Bazan of the Caja Rural team finished third while Davide Rebellin of the Miche-Guerciotti team was in fourth place 23 seconds behind
Giovanni.
This stage was difficult for the riders because there were four mountains and two sprints in the race.
After 47 kilometres, a group of four riders including Walter Fernando, Enrique Sanz, Victor de la Parte and Noel Martin made the first break. All of them gained an advantage of six minutes over the peloton.
Walter Fernando was followed by Enrique Sanz and after a few kilometres Walter took a lead in the first mountain race. In the second and third climb of the race with 73 kilometres to go, three cyclists, Walter Fernando, Enrique Sanz and Victor de la Parte
took a lead.
In the last climb, a new group of six riders were formed. At 117 kilometres, the gap had shot up to 5 minutes and 20 seconds, with Giovanni Manuel grabbing the title of King of Mountain of the day ahead of Rui Alberto and Javier Moreno.
In the first sprint of the race, the group of three riders including Luis Mas Bonet, Oscar Grau and Manuel Anton took a lead in the race. Luis Mas Bonet took an advantage of three minutes over the peloton.
With 98.2 kilometres to go, Walter Fernando joined the two riders Alan Perez Lezun and Victor de la Parte. However, after a few kilometres, Fernando maintained his speed and finished the second sprint ahead of the other riders.
Rui Alberto Faria Da Costa of the Movistar team took a lead in overall classification with the timing of 5 hours, 2 minutes and 43 seconds.
Javier Moreno Bazan of the Caja Rural team was at the second place with a difference of 5 minutes. Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas of the Euskaltel-Euskadi team was at the third spot 7 seconds behind Alberto.
The stage winner Manuel Baez Alvarez was in seventh place with a difference of 31 seconds.
