Giovanni Trapattoni has urged Darron Gibson to leave Manchester United in order to play more football. The Republic of Ireland manager is excited about the midfielder’s talent but he thinks that the talent needs to be utilized by playing and not sitting on the benches.
Trapattoni said, "He can do more. He has big potential and the right mentality but I said a year or a year and a half ago that if I were Gibson I would go to another club where I can play continuously. With this you can build your mentality. Manchester is Manchester and is obviously an important club but sometimes in the end you need you need to play, play, play.”
Trapattoni had similar sentiments back in September 2010 as well, to which Gibson reacted by saying, "To what club, other than Manchester United, could I go to improve my game? If Trapattoni wants me to move somewhere like Stoke where I'll get more games, but have little chance of winning anything, then I just don't know." No hard feelings were exchanged between the two and Gibson retained his place in the Republic of Ireland team. Trapattoni’s comments have come after Gibson scored a goal from 25 yards against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wales-c3041 in the home nation’s cup on Tuesday. The manager thinks that Gibson is still not a complete package and needs more playing time to become a better midfielder.
Darren Gibson started his professional football career from Manchester United’s youth ranks in 2004. He has made very little progress in his seven years with the club, having played only 50 games for the club. He has never been able to establish himself as a first team starter. Despite being left on the United benches, he has enjoyed winning the titles. He was part of the squad that won the Premier League and Champion’s league titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
He has scored some important goals for Manchester these include a 25 yard strike against Hull City in the last Premier League game of the 2008-09 season. He also scored both goals in United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham in the semi final of the Premier League cup. Gibson was granted a starting birth in the second leg of the Champions League tie against Bayern Munich and he found himself on the score board in just three minutes.
Gibson’s talent has never been denied and has even led to a dispute. The Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland locked horns about his representation for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Republic-of-Ireland-c2987 squad. Northern Ireland came back to persuade him to join the side but he refused.
With a league title with in the grasp of Manchester United, Gibson will have another chance to be part of a championship team. If he does heed Trapattoni’s advice it will be interesting to see which team he ends up with and what kind of performances he delivers.
