Girdling with a thick metal band? will it save a tree split lengthwise by lightning?

A large tree has its trunk (large stem) partially split lengthwise by lightning. It was suggested that girdling with a thick metal band would save this tree from eventually dying. Is this suggestion good advice??

As long as it does not cut into the bark and kill the vascular cambium by drying it out.  It should work if you can connect most of the sides from top to bottom.
