i want to get into a golf scholarship to an SEC school. i am currently shooting 117 on 18. i am a freshman. i can hit the ball up there with the girls who usually shoot in the 70s, but then i loose it and i don't know why. i am practicing every tuesday and thursday, and have a PGA teaching pro as my coach. i also play in a summer program and work-out often. did it take you awhile to shoot low, or were you just good naturally? what was your practice schedule? i guess i am just impacient, but I don't want scouts to pass me up. I know I have three more years, but it seems like I will never get there. please tell me your story for some inspiration. thanks alot!

  1. As some others have mentioned, low scores and a solid short-game go hand-in-hand... drive for show & putt for dough.

You start dropping those 4 & 5 foot putts, and your score will drop as well.

As I've gotten older (I'm 52 now), I've been forced to realize how important course management is.

I don't necessarily play for the pin on every approach shot now; I'll more often play for the front apron and try to knock the chip close enough to tap-in the putt.

Golf is a "math problem" not "an art project"... 2+2=4, but so does 3+1.

Start out by trying to shoot a bogey on every hole, instead of par... maybe even double bogey on the Par 5's.

If you set goals that are reachable, your confidence will improve and you can then readjust your goals knowing they're within your reach.

You don't mention what part of the country you're in, but if at all possible, you should try to attend a Duramed Futures Tour event this spring/summer to watch the young ladies there. www.duramedfuturestour.com has the tournament schedule and the players listings.

The Futures Tour is for ladies, what the Nationwide Tour is for guys.

Several of the ladies played for SEC schools and most would be happy to talk with you if you catch them early in the week.

The quality of golf is spectacular!

Their tournaments are usually Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with practice rounds beginning on the preceding Monday.

I caddied for a young lady at a Futures Tour event this past summer, and was quite impressed by her practice and workout regime (she ran 3 miles every morning).

Many of the ladies have a "routine" that they repeat, in order to get ready for the days round.

Starting about an hour and a half before her tee time, my player would begin by stretching for about 15 mins.

Then she'd hit about 20 balls with her wedge, and reducing the number of balls hit with each successive club, work her way up through her bag until she got to her driver (5-6 balls). She would then putt for about 15-20 mins., starting off with tap-ins and working her way back to "makeable" 8-10 footers, then ending with a few really long putts to get  a feel for the speed of the greens.

There's really no "quick fix" to getting your scores down, it's going to take some time and patience on your part, but it's well worth the effort if that's what you really want!

    Good Luck!

  2. The game of Golf is 80% short game,  so focus on hitting the green in regulation and 2 putting, the birdies will start dropping,,,putting is an art and takes years to learn how to read greens and judge distances,,, always 2 putt always, its the 3 putts that kill your score,,  Pateince, Patience and more patience,,,, Golf is humbling and unforgiving as you well know, when you hit a bad shot, immediately forget about it, focus on your recovery shot and rememeber on some holes bogey is good,,,, It sounds like your driving is really good, so focus on your shorts irons, wedges, chipping around the green, your sand shots and of course, putt for an hour or more each day, truly that is where the game is won and the only way to lower your score. Try this, after you line up your approach shot and address the ball, see the ball going in the hole, then swing smoothly and follow through,,,, Good luck with your goals, hitem long and straight,,,,,

  3. I'm not a girl and I started playing golf well after I graduated from college.  To become better at golf, you have to practice the short game the most.  That is how you score.  You said it yourself that you can hit up there with the girls who shoot in the 70's, but you need to watch how the hit their approach shots and their short games.  Even if they miss the green, to shoot in the 70's, they are chipping the ball near or in the hole.  So keep practicing.  I would do something nearly every day whether you are inside or outside.  I practice my putting inside my apartment virtually every day.  Just putt to a particular target.  I use a leg on my coffee table.  Believe it or not, it has helped my putting a great deal.  I putt where I am looking when I'm playing the majority of the time and I have cut down on the dreaded 3 putt.

  4. Practice your short game, 100 yards and in and your putting.  Those two areas will give you a ton of imrovement.  And just relax out there.  Golf is one of the most mental games there is.  Just visualize what you want to do and your body somehow does it.  And to be honest, womens' golf has the least amount of players trying to get scholarships so the odds are in your favor.  You have four years to improve, watch some of the better womens' golfers and see how they approach the game and each shot and learn from them.

Good luck!  And by the way, if you get good enough for a scholarship think U of A.  Arizona that is!

  5. I don't know what else is on your plate, but practicing two days a week isn't going to cut it if you want a scholarship to a division one SEC school.  If this is really important to you start practicing EVERYDAY.  Spend less time on the course and more time at the range and practice green until you become a consistent ball striker.

  6. heres some advice to women golfers.STAY OFF THE GOLF COURSE! a 4 hour round always turns into a 5 hour round when i have women playing in front of me!
