Question:

Girl Golfers...?

So I am the captain of the girls golf team at my school and we are starting practice again, just conditioning to get ready for real practice in the summer. None of the girls are motivated and some that placed in state last year aren't even doing anything. My coaches are freaking out because our team has been so close... and we got second at state last year. We usually start in Jan.. but the coaches said they would wait til March just to give us all a break.

So, me being the captain... they told me to come up with an idea to motivate them. I tried, I had my uncle, who plays for the PGA Tour, come and talk to the team. They were good for like 4 days then gave up again. So now I'm at a loss and my coach's son was just diagnosed with cancer so he is too busy dealing with that to have to worry about us.

Anyway, now I am asking you for ideas. I just don't know what to do...

Anything would help!! Thanks :)

  1. who's your uncle?

  2. I believe if you are the captain you should just lead by example, but to make this easier on you here is a thought. Golf is not a team game, although is school it seems that way. You should play for yourself and only yourself. I gave up playing at my University because the coach was too into the team. I'm sorry but I hated it when I went out fired a 67 and my team mates all shot 80 or higher. Golf is an individual game, and if they don't want to practice than that gives you the opportunity to make your hard work pay off. Don't worry anout them play golf for yourself!!

  3. Babe -

Congrats on being named the captain of the team....very impressive.....sorry to hear about your coach's son, that's terrible...

I'm thinking that the best thing to do right now is to practice golf.....and the best way to practice golf is to play....so set up little mini-tournaments, sounds like you have a competitive team.....do skins, greenies, sandies....all those goofy games to make it fun, but also give 'props' to low score and keep track, maybe on a web site, or a spreadsheet and send out results......it's always good to have fun, but also keep it competitive, that's the key!

Good Luck in your upcoming season captain!!

  4. Watch a couple of episodes of "The Big Beak" and recreate the same challenge contests for your team. If they watch the show at all maybe they will respond.

  5. Maybe you can motivate by example.  Prepare for the season like you would normally and talk about how excited you are about the upcoming season.  You got so close to winning at state last year and you want to accomplish that goal this season.  My dad and I have this competition going and he thinks that he can beat me although I continually beat him on a routine basis.  I keep track of scores each time we play and remind him of how many times he hasn't won.  Do mini-matchplay tourneys.  Those are fun.

  6. I love how every single post, you have to mention that your uncle is on the PGA tour.  Who cares, shut up!!!
