Okay, I've asked some questions about people rating my names, and no one ever seems to like Pilar! I think it's beautiful. When you first see the name, do you think it's pretty? Also when you first see it, how do you think it should be pronounced? I think one of the turnoffs is that everyone thinks it's pronounced (pill-ur), but it's really pronounced (pee-lar) THANKS!

I don't like the name. It's a very traditional hispanic name, maybe that's why people don't like it. I"m latin so I know it's pronounced, pee-lar. It's not a horrible name, just not everyone's taste.

I do not like that name. It made me think of a Caterpillar and a pillar that holds a building up. Sorry...no good.

i dont think there is anything wrong with word, i think its just one of those things that should be kept a word and not turned into a name.

however, if you like it then go for it. i know if someone said they didnt like taryn (which not everybody does) i still would have named my daughter that because i have to live with it, but then so does she. . .

go for it if you just cant imagine calling your daughtre anything else.

Urrrgggh, some of these answers are REALLY annoying!! Pilar doesnt "look" like pillar, because it's a HISPANIC name, and that's how a's and i's are pronounced in Spanish. However, it does MEAN pillar, in otherwords someone who's strong and upholding.

I think it's an awesome name thats not annoying and overused, and I'd TOTALLY stick w it! Goodluck!!

I like it. The way its pronounced. It is really unique. Don't care what other people think about the name. Its unique and beautiful.

I love this name.  I've always been a fan of Spanish names and I had a LOVING Spanish professor in college with the name Pilar and it fit her beautifully.  A lot of Americans are not familiar with this name therefore they're not going to like it.  Take it into context though, if you're not of a Spanish/Latin descent then maybe you shouldn't use it??

i'm sorry, but it's not fair if you name her pilar just cos you like it....she'll grow up hating it, and she'll be tormented by her school mates, and she'll be a loner all the time, and people will think she's a freak.

so do her a favour, and name her ANYTHING but pilar.

Ok first off don't spell a name one way and pronounce it another.  Every time a child writes it it won't have a pronunciation key next to it.  The name Pilar really looks like Pill-AR and that is how it is going to always be pronounced with out your telling someone otherwise.  The name Pilar is not top on my list but I think it would grow in me.  However Pee Lar is just ugly.

I knew several girls named Pilar (pee-lar) growing up and I always thought it was a fine name. It's just that it's a Spanish name and people in the US are unfamiliar with it. If you really like it then there's nothing to say you shouldn't use it. I don't know that I think it's a pretty name- to me it's just a name- but if you really love it then don't let others sway your opinion!  = D

I think it would often be mispronounced, as I pronounced it 'pillar' when I first read it. Also, the nicknames given may not always be nice.
