Well I have a new girlfriend (of 2 months) and she has a 2 year old terrier mix.it was VERY bad before I met her,and it was sulked beyond. The dog pees on the floor, barks alot, runs away, tears the house apart the second you lay your eyes off of it.I bought a kennel for it and it sleeps there when she is at work in the day,and when we go to bed at night but when i'm not there she lets it run around and be the alpha dog all day.(tearing up garbage etc) what Can I do to stop this? She also refuses to spay the dog (she thinks it's mean) for reasons i'll never know.PS the dog gets walked ALOT,it is just very energetic.

  1. I suggest from "It's me or the dog" that you decide.

    1. To the pound? X

    2. Ignore it?        X

    3. Give love compasion and discepline? YES!!!

Go over by your door, tell your dog( lets call him X)

to sit. Head torward the door to see if he jumps, if he does say sit, if X barks or jumps say SIT! and go out. Lesson, warnings and punishment.

You should also get a shock caller, not a very painfull one, a one that feels like a pinch. Hope this helps!

  2. Hmmm. Are you getting serious about the GF? Well, if it was me, believing as I do that how someone treats a dog is a pretty good indicator of how they'll raise children, I'd run a mile from this girl if you have thoughts of being a dad one day, or just in case it happens by accident. Or in my case, from a guy who had a dog this out of control. Do it now while it's still relatively easy. She obviously has no control over the dog, hasn't bothered to learn how to look after it so it's a good canine citizen. It doesn't bode well. Is this the kind of chaos you want to live with? I wouldn't, not for a week even. You can't train a dog for real when two people have such different ideas on how to treat the dog.

  3. spay and exercise. also more socialization. fixing it is the nicest thing you can do for it so it doesn't have to be uncomfortable in heat

  4. An untrained, unspayed dog wrecking havoc in the living quarters?  You're a lot more patient about this than 99% of people I know.

She needs to properly exercise the dog--terriers need to run and chase balls and sticks to get tired out. She needs to have it obedience trained as well, or the dog will completely destroy your place, which will not thrill the landlord if you're renting.  If this is your house, you better get the rules going fast of the dog will do woodwork damage and destroy the rugs by the end of the year.  An outdoor kennel may be needed if your girlfriend can't or won't do her part as owner.

Physical damage should be paid for by her, she's the owner, the dog is not under her control so she's responsible for damage.  This includes cleaning up the shredded garbage too.  If she's not able to control the dog, it won't get any better--you may have to rethink the idea of her living there with you.

In the meantime can you get a pet gate to at least confine the dog to one room when it's not in the crate?  If she doesn't respect the use of the gate and lets the dog run rampant, I'd let her know that her time as well as the dog's time there with you is going to be reconsidered.

  5. It needs to be in a kennel/crate to train it! Having it spayed is sorta sad but it will help it from marking its territory! So she needs to learn how to keep it in a cage to train it!

  6. Tell her that an unspayed dog can get a uterine infection that can take its life before you even see signs of sickness. Take it to training classes during the day when she is at work. Train it while she is away. Lose the dog accidentally (give it to a good home when she is at work).

  7. Means that it is her dog there really is nothing you can do...other than what you're already doing. if she can't manage to raise an acceptable dog and refuses to at least attempt to train it, teach it, or disciple it....let alone at least respect you enough to kennel it rather than let it destroy your joint residence...you gotta ask yourself, do you really want to be dating such a person...let alone continuing a relationship that could lead to her being the mother "raising" your children..? you didn't ask about her, I know...it's just I feel for you, but the "big picture" problem from the info given seems to be a much bigger problem than what you're trying to get advise on...whatever the outcome, I wish you the best of luck!

  8. she has to learn that she need to lay down the law, start with basic obedience, sit stay, lay down, potty outside .... then go to teaching the dog that certain rooms(and articles like garbage cans) are off limits(kitchen),

i dont know how you could put up with that, theres nothing more frustrating than a badly behaving dog.

inform her that allowing to let her dogs sexual frustration to mount while keeping him whole is mean... put him out of his sexual misery and get him fixed!

  9. terriers are very energetic dogs thats why. Also when the dog does something make a loud noise. It would also be good if you watched "Its me or the dog" in animal planet thats where I learned how to train my dog.

  10. Watch the Animal Planet show "its me or the dog."  Lots of training tips.

  11. Its actually mean keeping a dog intact! People often wrongly think that spaying a dog is mean, but its actually save her dogs life and reduce cancer later on in the dog life, the early the better!!

    Spaying/Neutering

Get your pet spayed or neutered. Spaying your female pet (cat or dog) can help to prevent cancers of the reproductive tract, including breast cancer, and will decrease the incidence of reproductive infections. Neutering your male pet will prevent testicular cancer and can decrease the incidence of prostate problems. Certain behavioral problems are also reduced when the pets are spayed or neutered.

    Testicular cancer

Fortunately, testicular cancer in dogs is usually much less aggressive than in man. For the majority of dogs, surgical removal of the tumour is curative. Whilst many people are uncomfortable with the idea of castrating a pet, we all have a duty to safeguard our pet’s health, and castration is kinder than cancer. In general, this surgery will not change your dog’s behaviour other than reducing dominance aggression (but not territorial or protective aggression). Castrated dogs only put on weight if overfed. In most instances, referral is not required; your own veterinarian is the best person to perform this procedure.

In some instances, these tumours can spread elsewhere. Evidence of lymph node enlargement, or the results from the laboratory that examine the tumour after surgery may suggest that more than surgery is necessary. In this case, your veterinarian will advise you come to the Murdoch Animal Cancer Care Unit to discuss treatment of the cancer. Medication can do a lot to keep your dog comfortable and generally doesn’t cause any illness itself.

Some testicular cancers can produce the female hormone, oestrogen. This produces skin changes and hair loss, but can also cause serious damage to the bone marrow that may be irreversible. A blood test will detect the marrow injury rapidly.

Terrier's are generally inside dogs!-but need alot of exercise and are pretty messy dogs.

The dog need to have both of you on board to have any success of training it

The dynamic terrier temperament. Most terrier breeds are remarkably similar. The same words are used over and over -- quick to bark, quick to chase, lively, bossy, feisty, scrappy, clever, independent, stubborn, persistent, impulsive, intense.

    Dogs on the sofa

Why do dogs tend to sleep on the sofa, your favourite chair or even sleep on your bed? They seem to love these places and often climb onto them repeatedly even when we repeatedly ask them to get down.

True enough, sofas, chairs and other furniture are extremely comfortable and that's one reason why dogs like to hang out on them. Another key reason often has to do with dominance. Before dogs became domesticated, the alpha dog, or leader of the pack, would always choose a high sleeping ground as the choice place to sleep. Feral or wild dogs in packs as well as wolves still sleep in this way. The highest ranking member of the pack sleeps at a level that is physically higher than the other members of the pack. This hierarchical nature of the pack is hardwired in modern dogs as well. By letting your dog sleep on furniture that is higher than the ground (the same places you relax and sleep on) you are quite possibly communicating to him/her that he/she is your equal. You may even be communicating that your dog is more dominant than you. This is especially true if your dog regularly exhibits other dominant behaviour and it has the potential to escalate into a real problem, including aggression. These other dominant behaviours include growling at you, leaning on you, eating food before the human family, entering or leaving doorways before you and generally not listening to you etc. A dog that KNOWS that every member of the family is higher in rank, will generally not exhibit these behaviours.

It is therefore good practice, not to allow your dog access to these high sleeping grounds (or high relaxation grounds) in order to assure your position as the leader of the pack. If you are not home and the dog has access to these higher places for resting, than placing certain objects that dogs dislike on the couch or chair in question is a great idea. There are plastic items in most pet stores that have blunt plastic spikes on them that are perfect for this situation. If the dog jumps on the couch or chair, it lands on the blunt spikes which don't hurt the dog but make it uncomfortable for the dog to lie on.

It is best that the dog's place of relaxation and sleep be a comfy blanket or basket on the floor. This will prevent possible behavioral problems associated with dominance. As always, all dogs should have basic obedience training and dominance issues should be discussed with your veterinarian or trainer.

  12. your the problem, stop being so jealous of a dog ffs,

  13. I feel so bad for you. Act like you like the dog that will make her happy. Start doing lots of stuff and feed it treats. like those bacon strips. You should really get it fixed . by not getting a dog fixed can cause serious health problems. Get these facts and print theem out 4 her 2 read. what could happen by not getting the dog fixed could cause way more meaness and pain. good luck!!!!!!

  14. Take matters into your own hands. Start training the dog basic obed. commands. Let her know that YOU are the alpha and ruler of the house, not her. The dog has got it in her head that she rules the roost, and you've got to show her who is boss.

Then explain to your girlfriend that spaying your dog insures a longer, healthier life. Unaltered dogs are more prone to cancer and other life threatning illnesses.

    Good luck!

  15. She is not doing her dog any favors not spaying it. It sets them up for getting not just pregnant if she ever got out, but an infection in their uterus or uterine or ovarian cancer.

Sounds like she needs some formal training to learn how to behave and be a polite canine citizen. Your GF is letting the dog be the boss and do whatever the dog wants. (Honestly sounds like one of those dogs you see on the Cesar Milan Dog Whisperer show, sorry).

Unfortunately, unless the dog has been diagnosed with separation anxiety sometimes that can be treated with medication. But it doesn't sounds like it. It needs training to fix the behavior problems. If not, it may get worse to the point where it starts biting people.
