  1. With all of the help that is available, I think it's stupid to do a home birth or unassisted birth.

My labor went just fine, I had a healthy pregnancy and everything.  But I ended up needing an emergency c-section.

Just because everyone is healthy, doesn't mean an unassisted labor/delivery will go alright.

  2. If I absolutely had no other option I would...I'd die trying :)

If I could give myself an epidural I definitely would give it a shot !

  3. yes definetly, when i was thinking about my birth plan i had this image in my mind of me reaching between my legs to be the first to touch her but it didnt work out that way as she wasnt breathing and was blue and i had to have an episiotomy but maybe next time

  4. Yup.  I've had midwives, and next time around my husband and i are considering an unassisted birth.

If everyone is healthy, childbirth is just childbirth.  Easiest thing in the world :)

  5. if i need to i have to but i would be so scared

  6. yes if i was put in that situation any woman would

  7. No. I had a very complicated cesarean with my first child, and any other children I may have will have to be C-sections.  I definitely couldn't do that myself! :-)

EDIT- What the heck was the thumbs down for?  Because I can't perform surgery on myself?!

  8. Yes.

If no one was there to "catch" then a blanket on the floor is sufficient.

What exactly do you think birth attendants do in most deliveries?  Not anything useful!

  9. Yes (l'm a Midwife).

  10. yes if it came to it or someone elses. my daughter has 3 children and the last 2 her partner had to deliver as the labour was so quick and midwife couldnt get to her in time.

  11. Yes, I could if need be. However, I don't see that being necessary as I live 8 miles away from the Hospital, the Fire Station is only 1 mile down the road, and if, for some reason, an emergency home birth is done my Husband would be the one delivering the baby- under my supervision. My last two births were fairly uncomplicated so he would hopefully just need to guide the baby out after they have crowned. I would worry about him pushing the head down gently enough and correctly to deliver the shoulders, but I am sure he would manage just fine. And as long as baby is breathing and resuscitation is not needed then I would have him just wrap up baby in a clean towel and blanket (I am due in January) and hand him or her to me while we wait for the ambulance to arrive.

Now let's hope that won't be necessary ;).

  12. Oh gosh no.  I wouldnt want to!

  13. If the delivery was as easy as my last two, then sure.  I think I could.

  14. I don't know if I could or not,I haven't ever really thought about it.I wouldn't want to though.I see no need in giving birth without meds. That is just the way I prefer.Every woman is different and some like it without meds, some like it with them..But no I do not think I could..

  15. Well, put in a situation of necessity I suppose I could.  I mean, middle of the desert, no phone, no people to help ... no choice :-)  Beyond THAT - no chance I would want to.  I would rather have a very trusted doctor and/or midwife by my side.

  16. I am with Awaiting Scarlett.  I had my first at home with a midwife.  With our second we will do the same.  If we were to have a third I might consider an unassisted home birth.

  17. Yep. My daughter was born in a hospital, and the only  (minor) complications were actually caused by all of their meddling and interventions. My next baby will be born either at home or a birth center - assisted by a midwife, but in a pinch, I think I'd be fine. Your body is meant to birth babies - so long as it's a normal pregnancy, having a doctor is overkill!

  18. if i had to i think i could, in that situation you have to do whats has to be done! if there's no one else around then then its down to you to get on with it and deliver your baby!

at the end of the day millions of women have done this since the start of time and across the world as we speak!

  19. noway that would be painfull

  20. No I'd be too scared but I suppose if I had to of course I would

  21. No.  I had complications.  I had preeclampsia, which was hard, but then my son's heartbeat slowed way down, came out face up and ripped me-a lot- and had the cord wrapped around his neck twice.  Then they couldn't control my bleeding.  Thank God I was in a hospital.

  22. Not with this little guy, no. I ended up needing a C-section and it was found that his cord was wrapped around his neck. No way could I have done a "DIY" birth!

  23. I delivered my 1st she was coming so fast didn't have time to make it to the hospital, as soon as she came out the paramedics showed up.

  24. I almost did. I drove myself to the hospital. I could have done it but I would rather leave it in the hands of the Doctors.

  25. only if i really really had to but i'd much rather be on a hospital bed with a midwife looking at my bits and waiting for the baby to pop out....ok so not like its that easy but you know what i mean lol

  26. I wouldn't want to. I worry a lot and like the idea of being in the hospital in case something goes wrong. I pretty much did though with my first. I was sound asleep when my water broke- I went to the hospital with no labor. Because I had only had slight back labor the doctors and nurses were arguing about if I should stay or go home. Almost 17 hours after arriving there and getting an epidural for a pinched nerve it was still believed I wasn't in labor fully. I mentioned pressure twice to the nurse- she said that was a contraction. When my husband insisted they check- my babies head was visible. Because they were unprepared the doctor showed up literally just in time to catch- even the nurses in the room didn't do much. So I know I probably could- but no not something for me!

  27. I think I could if I had to. I am going to the hospital to deliver I will have an unmedicated birth but I like the thought that if something happens I have a knowledgeable staff to assist.

  28. A woman's body knows just what to do. Theoretically, a laboring woman could just lay back and relax, and everything would happen on its own-even pushing! However, complications are always possible -that's all we really 'need' doctors for during labor. Personally though, I like the comfort of having a trained, experienced staff, including my Dr, and any equipment we'll need.
