Girls Hockey event getting more popular than it was expected to be according to the organisers
Girls Hockey event was just started to bring in the girls in the sport and make it a little more interesting for people but the organiser had not expected it to become so popular when they thought about it first.
They had started by inviting 14 leading countries in the ice hockey world but they were amazed when they got entries of 20 women’s teams from around the world straight away.
International Ice Hockey Federation’s women's program manager, Tanya Foley talks about the response as she tells that she was expecting nothing as one believes that not many women would be interested in playing one of the most physical sports and would not
be tough enough to face injuries in the game but the feedback was shocking in her opinion, as he said while talking to NHL.com,
"It was really funny because we started looking at doing it late-summer last year. I decided to just throw this out there and see what kind of response we got. I expected nothing, and we had 20 nations sign up right away."
Foley did not expect many European countries to turn up for it and thought she could get some response from Canada and USA only but she was proved wrong when there were events for Girls Hockey held in 25 different countries of the world and in total there
were 165 events held across the world.
International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) can only deal with federations of the countries but there were a lot of communities in different countries who helped the event. And there are individuals as well who can contribute.
Foley says that it is open for everybody. This is a different thing so anyone who has got interest and can play a part in it can have a go it as he added,
"This event opens it up to anybody -- any club, any team any league. Anyone that has a passion to try and grow the sport, they can run an event. It's definitely a unique program for us and we're excited because it proves that there's a lot of people that
want to help."
This year it is expected that there will be more than 300 events held in 30 different countries.
