Girls Under-18 Pan American Cup: Peru vs. Puerto Rico – Volleyball news
The Girls Under-18 Pan American Cup is underway in Tijuana, Mexico, as to Peru and Puerto Rico came head to head in a fixture played recently. By the time that the night was out, the Peruvians had proved themselves to be the better of the two by securing
a victory of 3-2.
It took some time for the Puerto Rican side to come into form as the Peruvians were able to win the first set of the game with relative ease. However, the Puerto Ricans were able to rally together and stepped up their game in the second set. Puerto Rico
bagged the second set after a tough battle. With the score level at 1-1, the third set of the game was won by the Peruvians while the Puerto Ricans equalised the game by sealing the deal on the fourth set. Both teams were hard put to make a win in the remaining
set of the game. It was the decisive fifth set that finally got the Peruvians the victory after two hours and 15 minutes of game play. The intensity of the competition is reflected by the final set scores that stood at 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-27 and 15-13.
The Puerto Rican coach made the following statements after his team lost the match: “We made less mistakes than yesterday (against Dominican Republic), but we faced again a really good team like Peru that knows how to play the fundamentals.”
The highest number of points scored by any player from either side was 23. These were added to the Peruvian side of the score board by Milagros Rodriguez, the captain of the Peru team. Rodriguez was helped by team-mates Izabot Bravo as well as Angela Leyva,
who scored 13 and 12 points respectively.
The players that stood prominent from the Puerto Rican side were Pilar Marie Victoria, Kanisha Jimenez and Stephanie Massanet. Victoria was able to keep the pressure on the Peruvian side by adding 17 points to the Puerto Rican side of the score board while
Jimenez tallied 16 points. Massanet also made her presence felt by registering 13 points.
Rodriguez made the following comments after her side had won the match: “We had our ups and downs, also fell in excess of confidence, but in the end we recovered our enthusiasm and won.”
Next up for the Puerto Rican side is a match against El Salvador whereas the Peruvian team will take on the Dominican Republic.
