Like, do you ever find it awkward to have this guy touching your legs and hips constantly?

  1. I dont dance..=P

  2. Personally, I don't find it particularly weird or awkward at all.

My first experiences with partnering were with a guy who had been in my ballet classes for years.  I knew him so well that it never occurred to me to be awkward or embarrassed.   Having such a good first experience I am sure helped me think of partnering as part of ballet, and not as this creepy thing you have to do sometimes.

As I learned more, I began working with different partners and I began practicing complicated lifts, which really don't give you the chance to be awkward.   You have to spend all of your mental energy to keep from falling.

A new partner always takes a bit of getting used to.   It can be a bit odd if you don't know them, but its a bit odd dancing with anyone (male or female) that you don't know, regardless of touching.

Generally I am someone who doesn't like to be touched, but in the dance studio I don't think about it in the same way.    As a dancer your body is always on display, always being inspected and corrected.   In the dance studio, my body doesnt belong to me,  it belongs to the company.  And you do whatever you have to do to get the dance correct.

  3. I've done some partnering work.  When I first started, it felt funny, but then I got used to it.  The guy is basically positioning his hands to hold you correctly so neither of you fall.
