I'm 12 years old and I got my period on July 16th but I didn't get anything until yesterday - September 2nd. Yesterday was pretty normal and I only went through a couple of pads but then today I went to school, and I bled through my underwear and pants and had to wear a sweatshirt around my waist. The thing is that it didn't really bleed through the pad, it just came somewhere that wasn't protected. I thought it was a lot, because the first time I leaked my pants, it felt like I was peeing myself a couple of times. Then when I got home, I had to change my Kotex overnight pad every hour, and it comes out reddish- blackish. I'm not sure if I'm getting clots, but during my last period, I did get a few clots on the 2nd and 3rd day of my period.

Is this normal? I'm really worried.

  1. I think you're just not used to your period. If just sounds like bloodclots. Blood can have different color/consistencies/smells. No problem. It sounds like you don't have the pad positioned snugly in your undies or the pad is wrong for your shape. To this I recomend 2 things. Buy/wear tight fiting underwear (like the hanes comfort soft no ride up or whatever there called.) You could also try buying a different brand. know whenever I used maxis they always used to bunch up because I was petite.

Is your pad really full or is ti just 'wet'? Look at the back of your pad when you throw it away. If it's leaked through the back layer, it's fully saturated and you need to change it. If it just feels cold/wet on the top layer...that sucks but you don't really need to change it. I've had my period for 6 years. I now use a lunette cup and cloth pads. I know that you've just started your period and all this is really over whelmin, but if you find yourself finding pads scratchy/iratible and tampons leaving you dry. (not to mention the risk of TSS) Please consider a menstrual cup or cloth pads. A menstrual cup is worn internally like a tampon, but it absorbs the flow, and is reusable. The lady cup and the lunette are the smallest and marketed towards teens. Cloth pads work the same as regular pads, but are way more customizable, and softer. You don't get that scratchy/ichy/burning feeling from them. The odor is considerably less than regular pads. You have to wash both of these, but I'd rather wash them off in the BR or home than leak blood into my pants. (It's way easier than I thought to. Washing most pads is like period undies, just pretreat and throw in the washer.)

Oh, and clots can happen throught your period, on one day or the entire time. You'll learn whats normal soon enough. Here are some places you can go for advice on cloth pads/menstrual cups/women related issues.

  2. While it is always best to speak with your doctor, when I was younger my period was very irregular.  There was a point when I was about 13 when it would be extremely heavy for 14 days! Thank goodness that's over! Your body is going through major changes and it takes some getting used to.  Pay attention if you are in extreme pain or smell a foul ouder.  That usually indicates trouble.

  3. If the bleeding is severe, consult a doctor.

I just think it's because you're new to this. Your period won't be consistent for like the first year or two.

  4. This is extremely normal. Nothing to worry about. In the first 3 years of your period its gonna be kinda weird and not on a schedule some of the time. Dont worry about it

  5. I would suggest seeing a doctor just because there is so much blood. However, it is possible that your periods will be on the heavy side. Clots are there to try and slow the blood flow down.

I hope this helps out a little for you.

  6. it's normal. don't worry you sound alot like me lol.

periods are just whack and nottt fun.

just make sure you'r completely protected, cause you dont kno what might happen. get extra long pads w/ wings. they aren't the comfiest but theyre better than bleeding through. and try super or super plus tampax pearls. just know it'll be over soon! for now! :]

  7. Clots that are quarter sized or bigger should be a concern.  I would highly recommend seeing a doctor.  Nobody on this site will be able to help you enough.  But whatever you do, make sure you are getting enough iron since you are losing so much blood, and drink enough fluids.  If I were you, I would discuss things with my mom.  Mom's always know best.
