Gisela Dulko, Anabel Medina Garrigues reach quarterfinals of Abierto Mexicano Telcel Championships
Gisela Dulko continued her good run in the women’s singles circuit as she thrashed Spaniard Silvia Soler Espinosa in straight sets to make a place in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Abierto Mexicano Telcel Tennis Championships 2011 in Mexico.
Dulko, who has lost only nine games in her last four matches, was once again positive in her approach. She opened her account with a serve break and then dropped only one game to wrap up the first set 6-1. The second set also ended in a similar fashion.
The world’s number one doubles player lost only one game in the second set as well to seal a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over her Spanish opponent.
Gisela has been in an incredible form of late. In her previous match at the ongoing Mexican Open, she dispatched the Georgian qualifier Anna Tatishvili in straight sets.
The Argentinean star will now take on another Spanish player Laura Pous-Tio in the quarterfinal. Pous-Tio wasted no time as she knocked out Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-1 in her second round match.
Meanwhile, Anabel Medina Garrigues beat the top-seed Julia Goerges of Germany in her second round match to qualify for the quarterfinals.
The Spanish Garrigues, who did not drop a single game on her serve in the match, took the first set 6-4 after taking a crucial serve break.
The second set was more competitive as it went to a tie-breaker. Both players played well and committed minimal unforced errors but it was Garrigues who denied her opponent from taking the match into the final set as she claimed a sensational 6-4, 7-6 victory
over the 22-year-old Goerges to move into the quarterfinals.
She will now face seventh seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who had earlier claimed a straight-set victory over Romanian Madalina Gojnea.
In other matches, third seeded Greta Arn of Germany pulled out a spectacular 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win against Czech Renata Voracova in a match that lasted more than 150 minutes.
Despite her terrible second set play, Arn won the match quite comfortably in the end. Her opponent in the quarterfinals will be Johanna Larsson from Sweden, who came back from a first-set deficit to earn a 2-6, 6-2 and 6-3 victory over Mathilde Johansson.
Sixth-seeded Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja also moved ahead to the quarterfinals. Her opponent in the second round, Lesya Tsurenko retired in the second set after consulting her trainer. Parra Santonja was leading the match by 6-3, 1-0 when Lesya pulled
out due to a spine strain.
