Gisela Dulko/Paola Suarez overcome Dushevina/Peer to reach semis – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Argentinean wild card entrants, Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez, stomped over the Russian-Israeli collaboration, Vera Dushevina and Shahar Peer, in troublesome three sets at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 on Monday. They formulated a 7-6(2), 6-7(3), 10-6 score
line against their opponents in the quarter-final at this WTA Premier Mandatory event taking place in Miami, Florida.
The Argentinean veterans remained solid throughout the match and eventually took down their rivals in one hour and 51 minutes. They exchanged seven serve breaks and dominated in the super tie-breaker to secure a place in the last four at Key Biscayne.
Dulko and Suarez nervously entered the Tennis Center at Crandon Park and after losing their serves twice, they went 1-4 down. However, they made a fitting reply and wiped out the following four games in a row. Regardless of exchanging another break in the
last two games, the Argentineans went berserk in the tie-breaker and clinched the opener with a 7-6(2) score line.
The Russian-Israeli junction re-gathered their strength in the second set and after earning the coveted break in the second game, they jumped to a 2-0 lead. However, they lost their edge in the very next game and after exchanging three more serve breaks,
the Russian-Israeli tandem enforced a tie-breaker. Dushevina and Peer outclassed the veterans in it and pulled out the equaliser with a 7-6(3) win.
The match went to the super tie-breaker where the wild card entrants pushed their level of game. They prevailed throughout the final set and subsequently sealed the decider with a 10-6 score line.
Summing up the beaming Argentineans’ performance, Dulko and Suarez nudged up an equal first serve share of 64 per cent but acceptably marked 30 out of 54 points on it. They committed six double faults and more unforced errors but converted seven out of 14
break opportunities to their advantage. The Argentineans ended the match with 88 points in contrast with their rivals’ 82 points.
Next up for the wild cards is the winner of the match between sixth seeded Italians, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, and the Russian-Chinese duo, Ekaterina Makarova and Jie Zheng.
