Gisela Dulko beats Aleksandra Wozniak, advances to the quarterfinals of Monterrey Open 2011
Argentine Gisela Dulko secured a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 win against Aleksandra Wozniak on Thursday in the second round of the Whirlpool Abierto Monterrey Open 2011.
Dulko required only one hour and fourteen minutes in dispatching her opponent and reaching her second quarterfinal of the season.
The 26-year-old started the match brightly as she looked in firm control from the first game. She clinched the crucial serve break and then held on to the lead to take the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Dulko completely dominated Wozniak in nearly all aspects of the game. She performed well and remained focused in tight corners. Although her first serve ratio was only a mere 51 per cent, yet she managed to win 80 per cent of her first
serve points. Her defence was also solid and she saved five break points in the match.
The Mexican Open Champion Dulko had displayed her skilful tennis brilliantly in her opening match of the tournament as well.
The only worrying sign for Dulko ahead of the quarterfinal clash will be the high number of unforced errors she has produced in the tournament so far. The world number 56 has committed eight doubles faults in the completion so far but if she can rectify
this deficiency in her game, she could be a serious contender for this Women’s Tennis Association tournament.
Dulko, who has won four WTA titles in her career, came to the tournament as one of the favourites. The number one doubles player of the world won her first title of the season at Acapulco recently defeating Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja in the final. She
has also gone up in the world rankings to number 56 from the 73rd spot according to the latest WTA rankings list. If she continues with the same form on the Tour, she will certainly be able to improve her ranking further.
On the other hand, Canadian qualifier Wozniak had a great time at the Monterrey Open until she came across Dulko. In the qualifying round, Wozniak was absolutely destructive winning all three of her matches comfortably. However, the Argentine proved too
much to handle for her and she bundled out of the tournament in straight sets.
