Giulia Sergas maintains her lead at New Zealand Women’s Open
Italian golfer, Giulia Sergas, retains the lead at the New Zealand Women’s Open. She carded a three-under par 69 in the second round to lead the championship by two strokes. Sergas, after shooting her career best round of eight-under par 64 in the first
round, has a total aggregate score of 11 under par 133 after two rounds.
Kristie Smith of Australia was second after showing some great shot-making ability throughout the second round. She posted a round of eight-under par 64 on the second day and had to be content with the second slot. She has a total aggregate score of nine-under
par 135 as she carded one-under par 71 in the first round. Smith was able to score nine birdies and a bogey in the round which lifted her nine places up the leader board. She was satisfied with her performance. “All the putts went down. I hold some great putts,
I am happy with a couple of under par rounds and my name is very much visible on the leader board. I didn't play any bad shots and that three putt came out of the blue,” she said.
The pick of the day was Linda Wessberg of Sweden with her course-record leveling performance of nine-under par 63 set by Pernila Lindberg of Sweden in the final round last year. She is on the third spot at the leader board after the thunderous second round.
Three times Ladies European Tour winner, Wessberg, aimed to continue with her excellent form to win the fourth title. "I started out a little crappy really because I hit it in the water on my second hole, the 11th, and took a bogey there, after that it was
pretty simple and straight forward. I have been working on my wedges and it paid off. My longest birdie putt was from 12 feet and the others were all within six feet.” Wessberg said, "I had five birdies in a row during the pro-am (on Wednesday) and at the
time I thought this isn't very necessary right now."
The defending champion Laura Davies made a comeback in the tournament with a score of six under par 66. She was part of the four way tie in the fourth spot with Lydia Ko of New Zealand, Pernila Lindberg of Sweden and Cassandra Kirkland of France. The 13-year-old
amateur golfer, Lydia ko of New Zealand, is constantly impressing with her performances. She has continued to execute around a 5,000 yard course better than most of the professionals in the tournament.
The cut line for the tournament has been set at four over par and a few recognized players failed to make it. The next round promises to be exciting for the spectators and players alike.
