  1. the moon affects gravity, the oceans affect the moon, the air you breathe, the food you eat, the water you drink, the electro magnetic field that keeps you alive from solar radiation, need more?


  2. The bulk of humanity lives along the coastlines or near major rivers - both great sources of food and mobility (it is much easier to float things than carry them great distances).

    Warm climes are easier to survive in than cold.  Mountain ranges and seas make any territory easier to defend.

  3. Ezekiel took mine, but one he forgot about the ocean is that is dissolves tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide, keeping it out the of atmosphere.  It also absorbs a lot of solar radiation and regulates the earth's temperature.  In my opinion, the oceans are  the most important feature on earth. The magnetic field is a big one too.  People often forget how important the magnetic field is.  Although technically, it's not a surface feature :)

    I really like this question.  Made me think back to my geoscience class I took at Penn State a few years back.
