Give me a good macaroni and cheese recipe :)?

Every time I try to bake my mac and cheese, it comes out really dry, gritty, tasteless, or a mix of the three.

I know there's a way to bake it to where it will still come out good and creamy. Any ideas?

Thanks! :)

  2. Lillian's above recipe sounds similar to mine.  I melt butter to mix into dry bread crumbs for sprinkling over the top before baking.  Dry bread crumbs come in a variety of flavors, I use the Italian with herbs.  I've learned to put it on rather thick, it holds the moisture in while baking.

  3. Lots of great choices, and none with the ubiquitous blue box that my kids insisted on. Here's one more possibility, featuring blue cheese, that I call Mac & Cheese for Grownups.

  4. Here is a link to an Bon Appetit recipe, which is not traditional, but is really quite good.  You won't have any problems with creamy or tasty,

  6. Creamy Mac & Cheese

    Ingredients:

    8 oz. elbow macaroni

    2 tablespoons butter

    2 tablespoons flour

    1/2 teaspoon garlic salt

    2 cups milk

4 oz. processed cheese, cut into cubes

4 oz. cream cheese, cut into cubes

1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

    Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cook macaroni as directed on the package. Drain and set aside.

In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Mix flour and garlic salt into the melted butter. Cook and stir until the mixture gently bubbles for one minute. Add the milk and stir until smooth. Cook until liquid gently starts to bubble. Cook one or two minutes more or until thickened. Add processed cheese and continue to cook and stir until cheese is melted. Remove from the heat and add cream cheese and cheddar cheese. Stir until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth. Add cooked macaroni and mix thoroughly.

Pour mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Bake in a 350° oven for 20 minutes or until bubbly.

  7. Here is my recipe - it always comes out well:

Macaroni and Cheese - add a pound diced ham, a pound of browned hamburger or a package of sliced hot dogs and a package of frozen mixed veggies, peas or corn to the mac and cheese before pouring it into the baking dish to make a hearty meal.

    Ingredients

8 ounces dried elbow macaroni (2 cups)

1/2 cup chopped onion (1 medium)

    2 tablespoons butter

    2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

    1 teaspoon dry mustard - I like Coleman's English

    1/8 teaspoon black pepper

    2-1/2 cups milk

1-1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (6 ounces)

1-1/2 cups shredded American cheese (6 ounces) - I like to use Veleeta

    Directions

Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain; set aside.

Meanwhile, for cheese sauce, in a medium saucepan cook onion in hot butter until tender but not brown. Stir in flour, dry mustard and pepper. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir over medium heat until slightly thickened and bubbly. Add cheeses, stirring until melted. Stir in cooked macaroni. Transfer mixture to a 2-quart casserole.

Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree F oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until bubbly and heated through. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Makes 4 servings.

Saucepan Macaroni and Cheese: Prepare as above, except reduce milk to 2 cups. After draining macaroni, immediately return macaroni to the saucepan. Pour cheese sauce over macaroni; stir to coat macaroni with sauce. Cook over low heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until heated through, stirring frequently. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
