Two of the greatest (mature) anime series I've seen in the past several years have been Death Note and Hellsing Ultimate.

Death Note is pretty much the most engaging anime I've seen to date with a fascinating premise. It is cerebral and gets very intricate so it demands your full attention. We've all heard the saying "With great power comes great responsibility"...well, this show takes it to another level, as well as begs the question "What would YOU do with a Death Note?"

Hellsing Ultimate, however, is my personal favorite. A lot of action and gore, a diverse cast of international characters (British, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Romanian, Scottish), dark with funny moments here and there, wonderful animation and voice acting (yes, even dubbed), symbolism galore, a mysterious character based on theoretical quantum mechanics, and one of the most powerful and ruthless characters ever created in anime--Alucard. Although the OVA series is not complete yet, I think the first 4 will get you hooked.

You're just opposite of me. Then the best ANSWER is>>>>>>>>DEATH NOTE. If you just start watching it, you can never throw away your thoughts of it. The action is very interesting and it's a little bit scary to youngsters. However if you watched it already. Then try D Gray Man, Naruto Shippuuden, and maybe Bleach. Why don't you find it here.

shuffle! - it get's more depressing after the 13th ep

Black Lagoon - Very intense action, keeps you on your feet.

Koi Kaze - saddest of romances... but with a good ending like Elfen

eureka Seven - not really depressing, but the gore is there, and the elements are war driven.

chobits - nature is ultimately depressing considering his situation.

Girls Bravo - Girls Bravo features a young male student named Yukinari Sasaki who was teased and bullied by girls to the point that he developed an allergic reaction, breaking out in hives whenever he comes into contact with a female. One day, when he comes back from school, he falls into his bathtub and is transported to "Seiren", a mysterious world with a mostly female population. On Seiren he meets a young girl called Miharu whose touch inexplicably doesn't affect him. You will have to watch the rest of the series to find out more of the plot because I don't want to spoil it for you. While Seiren is featured in several episodes, the majority of the series takes place in Japan.

I thought it was an exceptional masterpiece and was so sad when the series had to come to an end when I had watched all of the episodes on my computer (I downloaded them to realplayer from youtube a while back), some of the english dubbed episodes are still on youtube, especially season 1 but the english dub of season 2 has been erased I think. Try asking around Y/A to find websites which have the rest.

I stumbled across this on youtube unintentionally, I watched the part that was on the screen, I found out the name of it, I researcched it a bit, tried to find the other episodes on youtube, started to watch the episodes continuosly and before I knew it, I was hooked!

As said before, I was blown away after I had watched the first couple of episodes since the storylines for every episode were so original and hardly repetitive. The storyline for the whole entire anime is original since I have never come across an anime with a storyline like this before. It made me laugh and nearly cry. I think that Girls Bravo is one of the most underrated and under - commercialised animes ever produced

It's funny, witty, smart, passionate, sympathetic, original, a tear - jerker and basically exceptional all-round, and yet it's underrated and under - commercialised.

The characters are lovable, the storylines are gripping, the dialogue and scenes are funny and some are totally sympathetic, passionate and sad, the climaxes are brilliant and keep you in suspense and the music is fantastic. Especially the intros; they're priceless! Here I'll show you them!

I thought this anime was priceless! But be forewarned, the language is mild, there is some violence with some blood and fight scenes. But the nudity is quite strong with naked girls and sexual content sometimes, hence the 15 rating, but that didn't bother me, just enjoy it like I did!
