...almost a year ago me and a co-worker was talking about his son. His son is a white American. He tells me that his son is about to obtain his Engineering degree...you gotta really be smart to get one.

....he says that in his class of about 30-35 students that he is the only native born american and that the rest are from Asia, the Middle East and India...this is in an American school locale.

I enjoy the cultures and people of India and Asia...I have not known many from the Middle East. However I am concerned about my country the United States.

Is the U.S. losing its edge in the world scene.

I am afraid that the arrogance and rebelliousness of our youth and their lack of respect for adults have resulted in a lessening of their commitment to authority (parents) resulting in a devalutation of audults...teachers.

...if they outwardly or subconsciously cannot respect one in authority they cant learn as well and therefore lose out academically.

Just a theory your opinion

  1. I'm not trying to sound anti American but I am really not happy with the decline in values in our culture.  I taught middle school (now in high school) and it's appalling, the majority of kids are barely literate, have an obscene sense of entitlement and treat teachers like tavern wenches.  Please don't take offense at any of this, there are decent young people but I've noticed a difference between cultures.  I did an exchange in Mexico (the ITESM is one of the best engineering schools in the world) and a teaching internshp and teachers down there get treated like royalty (I can't wait to go back).  And they are producing the engineers, lots of good doctors are coming from India and Asia... and most US high school kids can barely read.  One of the other teachers at my school said something like, "They don't care about u unless you're a text message or an MTV video" in reference to the "regular" students.

There is a school just for immigrants in my town and one day I got to visit, this was a class of middle school age kids from various African and Asian countries and I was so impressed, they were grateful to be in school, did what they were supposed to, and really wanted to learn.  I don't know what the catalyst was but in the usa, our values are declining.   I realize it's the teacher's job to make sure they learn but it's amazing to see the contrast between the cultures... I think it's unfortunate but we're just not teaching responsibility.  I hope nobody gets offended but this is the voice of experience.

  2. I agree I have lived in Sapin from the age of 18 to 21 I went to finish 12 grade I had to drop out the education system over there is fad more advanced that here I loved the country and wanted to live there but I had to come back with my tail between my legs because I could compete in the work force.

Did I mention I was an A student here, also children respect their teachers and parents kick their kids buts if the teacher calls home.
